http://www.eiu.com/public/topical_report.aspx?campaignid=Liveability2014 http://rt.com/uk/181660-liveable-london-study-cities/
London’s real estate prices keep soaring and foreign cash keeps pouring in, yet the ‘world’s most influential city’ has become one of the least appealing places to live in Europe, according to new figures.Despite this huge demand from international buyers, London is a less attractive place to live than Detroit, Cleveland, Manchester or Reykjavik, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest “livability” ranking has found. This is despite a recent Forbes list of "The World's Most Influential Cities 2014" which ranked London as the most influential city in the world, because it attracts more than double the amount of foreign direct investment deals than New York, which came in second. According the Economist, however, London’s success has proven to be a double-edged sword. “Global centers fare less well in the ranking than mid-sized cities,” the report said. “Global business centers tend to be victims of their own success. The ‘big city buzz’ that they enjoy can overstretch infrastructure and cause higher crime rates.” “New York, London, Paris and Tokyo are all prestigious hubs with a wealth of recreational activity, but all suffer from higher levels of crime, congestion and public transportation problems.” London and New York rank comparatively far down the list – 55 and 56 respectively. The survey assesses the livability in 140 cities worldwide based on 30 factors, including safety, health care, culture, environment, education and infrastructure. Melbourne has been declared the best city to live in the world for the fourth year running. The Australian city is followed by Vienna, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary. Of the top 10, six cities are in Australia and Canada.
My boy is from Calgary, but I don't know how it ranked so high with all that funky ass art they keep putting up over there.
Hmmm... Who would have thought that, when you cram more people into a smaller space, crime, poverty, and general unrest go up? Maybe people don't enjoy million dollar shoeboxes as much as we like to think they do.
I'm starting to see a pattern with these threads. Is ferrus wanting to immigrate to the US? :v:
Fuck the old fashion European cities Eastern Europe is the shit now. Damn, Czech Rep and Poland look so damn pretty Its a pity they have those...strange lenguages which have nothing to do with spanish, english nor german.
Rent in London is abhorrent. My neighbor is from there, and put short, he simply said London is a nest of vampires, all looking to suck more out of their victims than the rest. The image of London as the hipster/counter-culture capital of the world has run it's course. What remains are crazy prices and disgruntled people. Get an apartment while you still can, before those sneaky Swedes and Finns buy the whole place up.

While our cities aren't nearly as aesthetically pleasing to look at, they're probably more efficiently built.
Still not as bad as Cleveland

No. Not worse than Detroit. Detroit is the butt of so many original jokes for a reason.
I doubt it. At least you're unlikely to get shot in London.
I went to London and stayed over at some relatives in Epsom and i didn't find anything bad in the city.
I went to London and stayed over at some relatives in Epsom and i didn't find anything bad in the city.
It's good fun for a quick visit, but it's so prohibitively expensive in London it's unreal. House prices have been driven through the roof buy an explosion of buy-to-let landlords and have forced the cost of living up massively. Pretty much the only people who can afford to live in London are the elite bankers now.
I'm sure it's not as bad as they're making it out to be, but what really struck me when I visited London is the state of the suburbs. We took the train in from Stansted and as we neared London every other house and apartment building started to look really run-down and empty, before we reached the inner city.
I doubt it. At least you're unlikely to get shot in London.
That's the best joke I've heard all week. send him to london doesn't sound as good.
London is a nice city if you can afford to live there. Otherwise your living in council estate housing or highrises in the shit parts with the worst inhabitants London has to offer, paying london prices while earning less than a london wage.
So has anyone actually made an account at the economist source and downloaded the file to confirm that RT isn't bullshitting? They don't even mention Detroit's position on the list. ferrus also likes to use nothing but RT as source.
Can't be any worse nor better than Rockford :v:
It's a pretty city but like with most Capitals I wouldn't like to live there long term.
Probably because here in the UK everyone and their entire family think you're not English unless you move to London because literally everywhere else is shit or wherever All it really has on any other town or city is a sorta big ferris wheel
Well at least london is better than istanbul I guess. So whats going on? Today is hating the uk day or something?
I live in Southampton (south coast UK) and have a mixed view on London. The attractions are brilliant but it's always busy as hell. People generally don't seem to care about anything. I'm not bothered by nightlife so aren't going to comment!

Who knew that I lived so close to another FP member?
Melbourne really is a great city. Australia's just generally a nice place to live anyway. I'm glad i live here.
B-But London is an Alpha++ ranked global city! Seriously.

Ranked 55th of 140 cities is not bad. Hell, Kiev is ranked 126th despite the recent conflicts surrounding it, implying there are 13 other cities worse off. This is all from the RT article. I'm not sure about the rank of Detroit (the article didn't mention it) or the methodology in how the scores are measured and weighted as downloading the report requires registration.
I live in Cardiff but used to go to London quite often and while it's very enjoyable to visit, it's a place I really struggled to imagine living there. It's not just the houses that are expensive, it feels like a LOT of things there are double the price. Like, cinema ticket prices here are between £4-7 whereas in Leicester Square, they were something like £16 which is silly.
London is the worst place Ive been to. So many shady people. (If you know who I'm talking about.) Also dirty as fuck.
