The developers behind Kickstarter-funded Ouya will continue to look for funding outside the crowdfunding platform despite raising $4,876,890, millions over their original $950,000 goal, founder Julie Uhrman confirmed to Develop. "This is a really big undertaking and it's going to be expensive," said Uhrman. "We're looking for additional funds of money but more importantly we wanted to take it to Kickstarter regardless. Urhman states Kickstarter offered the necessary support from both gamers and developers in order to bring content and additional partners to the console. "It is unbelievable validation where gamers really demonstrate their enthusiasm with for what we're doing with dollars, and those numbers demonstrate that there is a market." She added she hopes to reclaim the television for gaming since the recent movement away from consoles and toward mobile platforms. "[Developers and gamers are] switching focus from TV to mobile platforms. Gamers find hardware and software still to be super expensive and developers feel that it is still complicated and expensive to bring games to the living room." Ouya is described as a $99, Android-powered, hackable game console. Polygon recently looked into the many challenges facing the console on its way to transforming the face of the industry. As CEO of Tiswaz Entertainent, Kevin Dent, told us: "It's not going to ship. It's just not going to ship. It just costs too much to develop this. $4 million is nothing. They've got to pay fabrication. They've got to pay designers. They've got to pay manufacturers. They've got to market it. It's a business. $4 million is nothing."
Source (The Verge)
I guess I can understand that they'd need more for a big production, but how about waiting a bit before asking for more money?
You see, this is why I was sceptical to begin with. What a waste.
"Oh we need this much money. Wait, you gave us more than four times what we asked for? We need more."
Well done for doing absolutely no market research, you fucking morons.
It's a shame too, because I would love to see a device like this succeed. The Wii, PS3, and 360 are all incredibly locked down with the developers actively trying to block personal development. This is attempting to change that. I really don't see this ever succeeding, though. My biggest worry is (if it fails,) if this will further cement console creators in the (erroneous) mindset "No, we must not try to open out consoles up, because look where it put the OUYA."
I seriously fail to comprehend how they can set a price not knowing what the costs are. It boggles my mind. This has seriously made kickstarter projects look like a fucking joke.
Kickstarters were already a joke.
they are acting like pussies, get your shit together, look at the guy that made the raspberry Pi
Could understand this if they didn't receive four times the amount expected of Kickstarter. Did they just want to show the numbers to a sponsor to make him believe the market niche is there? Can/will they still use the Kickstarter money in that case?
There's too much of a rush to Kickstarter. This is going to burn out crowd sourcing if people don't get their shit together soon.
Kickstarters were already a joke.
are you fucking kidding me
Kickstarters were already a joke.
There are plenty of good projects on kickstarter. It's not their fault it's getting filled with The Apprentice rejects.
there are so many games, documentaries, music albums, etc that have finally seen light because of kickstarter edit: why is this post getting funnies? It's true http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/880116884/taken-by-storm-a-film-about-storm-thorgerson-and-h?ref=live http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/crateentertainment/grim-dawn?ref=live http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2dawngames/ravaged?ref=live http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/260688528/clang?ref=live http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doublefine/double-fine-adventure?ref=live http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stainlessgames/carmageddon-reincarnation?ref=live http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/880116884/taken-by-storm-a-film-about-storm-thorgerson-and-h?ref=live
Kickstarters were already a joke.
90% is bullshit but there are enough projects that are actually worth the donation, the new Carmageddon game for example or that sword fighting game.
I'm pretty sure the guy who said this:
"It's not going to ship. It's just not going to ship. It just costs too much to develop this. $4 million is nothing. They've got to pay fabrication. They've got to pay designers. They've got to pay manufacturers. They've got to market it. It's a business. $4 million is nothing."
Isn't part of the company who made the Ouya. That said I think the Ouya will fail miserably.

It can be done. It's ambitious, no question, but similar projects have been undertaken (Raspberry pi, as mentioned). Of course industry CEOs and whatnot will say it's going to fail, they're scared shitless that consumers are taking their money and investing it in what's essentially their own system instead of the established brands.

I love all of the experienced investors in this thread giving detailed posts about how the Ouya is going to fail. Oh wait.
I love all of the experienced investors in this thread giving detailed posts about how the Ouya is going to fail. Oh wait.
but obviously you with your PHD in finance can tell us better right
I love all of the experienced investors in this thread giving detailed posts about how the Ouya is going to fail. Oh wait.
if you really think this is a good argument to anything you need a reevaluation of life don't need to be a chef to think the food tastes like shit. not that I think the ouya is bad, but that's the only statement you need to debunk this terrible argument
this just sounds like a giant scam to me really
this just sounds like a giant scam to me really
This is why I have yet to actually fund anything on Kickstarter.
Kickstarter is fine as long as what you back is going to get made. Games with dedicated teams that are genuinely passionate about what they've brought to the table. (Grim Dawn, Ravaged, Clang) Of course every once in a while you're going to end up with a product you'll never get. Like that Yogventures shit or Katalyka.
Voice says: "The sun doesn't want you to publish Katalyka, because it wants to be almost exactly LIKE Katalyka, but it keep it all a secret. If you publish your game, it is going to let people in on too many secrets." (paraphrasing)
:v:
I still can't figure out how to pronounce "OUYA".
I still can't figure out how to pronounce "OUYA".
like "booya" but without the B
"She added she hopes to reclaim the television for gaming since the recent movement away from consoles and toward mobile platforms." Maybe this project was secretly started because they hate Rovio.
It's stupid if you honestly believe that Kickstarter is "ruined" because of certain projects being backed there. That makes no sense. The core idea of Kickstarter is to give investors, fans, interested gamers, etc the ability to support developers and creators to help with their project. It doesn't matter if it's a documentary about ponies or a game about watering plants; it's a great fucking idea regardless. And so what if the "wrong" projects get huge investments? It's clearly not money wasted if the investors are interested in the project and if they get something out of it anyhow
