The Charity Commission for England and Wales rules 'Jediism' not religion
The body that regulates charities in England and Wales has rebuffed a registration application from a Star Wars-inspired organisation devoted to spreading the ways of the Jedi.
The Commission concluded that Jediism, as promoted TOTJO, is not a religion and does not promote moral or ethical improvement, for the purposes of charity law in England and Wales and so rejected the application.
That doctrine draws not only on the mythology of the Star Wars films, but also on other recognized religions and philosophical doctrines, the Charity Commission reported.
In a ruling that saw lawyers scrutinising the precise nature of Jediism and the force, the power that Jedi believe underpins the universe, the commission wrote that Jediism "lacks the necessary spiritual or non-secular element" it was looking for in a religion.
However, a United Kingdom charity regulator has, like the Death Star planet destroyer, obliterated those plans by concluding that the Order is "not a religion and does not promote moral or ethical improvement".
It comprises a loose framework of ideas with some common ground which individuals may interpret as they see fit. In 2011, 176,632 people told the government they were Jedi Knights. However, since then numbers have dropped significantly.
The Force confirmed to be FUCKING REAL
Who are they to say it's not a religion
does not promote moral or ethical improvement"
It's pretty debatable whether or not most religions promote that.
does not promote moral or ethical improvement??
that's literally the entire point of being a jedi
i mean, isn't this just saying that there can't be an organization collecting money for being "jediist"?
Why not? The argument "does not promote moral or ethical improvement" partially applies to every religion. Although I dare bet the Jedi book (if it exists) is a whole lot less bloody than traditional works.
I'm guessing the improvement part is because it's about charity.
Do they recognize Scientology? If yes, there's legal precedent for science fiction being recognized as an official religion and they should contest. If no, then everything is working as intended.

Scientology is considered a massive scam cult by most of the world other than the US.
I find their lack of faith disturbing.

I understand why they did it. I'd not believe in any hokey religions either, won't do much for you.

That's been a thing since circa "the sun will come back if you fuck me"
This is just what the siths would say
Of course the Jedi are not a religion.
They are a cult, a terrorist cult that has attempted to undermine our grand system of democracy and assaulted our great Supreme Chancellor.
Are you tired of bar fights being broken up with a mere "Jedi business, go back to your drinks", of a religious secret police, of the direct threat to the constitution we all hold so dear?
On this day, we vote for democracy, for justice, and for a New Galactic Empire!

Believe in it as a religion or a philosphy? Because if you believe in Jediism for real and are 100% unironic you're probably pretty dumb
if you believe in Scientology it's probably because you were lured into a cult and when it was too late to get out you were locked into their bullshit scam
Jediism as a philosophy probably works. And hey I can respect that, but a religion? the religion part is just a front.

Kids have been brought up to teenagers in jediism, i think you need to reevaluate this mystical barrier separating 'dumb shit', 'bullshit scams' and religion in your brain.
As a long time follower of R'hllor, this is a travesty for religious rights.
Jediism as its presented in the movies contains many concepts found in Buddhism and Daoism, in fact you could see the Force as a manifestation or interpretation of the Dao. Are they saying those are not legitimate religions?
