Somali pirates have freed a German-owned chemical tanker, reportedly after a $5.5m (£3.6m) ransom was paid.
The Marida Marguerite, with a crew of 19 Indians, two Bangladeshis and one Ukrainian, was seized in May by pirates armed with rocket-propelled grenades.
Kenya-based officials said a ransom was paid, but there was no independent confirmation.
Pirates now hold 25 vessels and 587 hostages after they seized another German-owned ship on Monday.
The EU's Indian Ocean anti-piracy force (Navfor) said in a statement that the cargo ship Ems River was taken in the early hours, about 200 miles (325km) north-east of the port of Salalah in Oman.
The ship was on its way to Greece from Dubai at the time of the attack, carrying a cargo of petroleum coke.
The EU said it had an eight-strong crew of one Romanian and seven Filipinos.
One Tuesday afternoon, the Marida Marguerite was sailing to safe waters, according to Andrew Mwangura, head of the Kenya-based East African Seafarers' Assistance Programme.
He said $5.5m was paid to release the ship. The vessel's owners have not yet commented.
Officials and companies rarely comment on the payment of ransoms, though analysts say such deals are widespread.
It seems like a nice act until you read they paid $5.5 million to get it back.
25 vessels ffs something needs to be done about this.
Bomb Somalia
Bomb Somalia
Hows about avoiding its territorial waters or maybe having some sort of armed escort since you seem to have forgot what happened in 1993.
Give all the boats RPGs see how the pirates like it
You'd think they'd have an escort for once.
25 vessels ffs something needs to be done about this.
Yeah, there are quite a lot of military ships out there. But I guess they only escort other ships.

I swear, one or two .50 machine guns on each ship would solve this problem so quickly you wouldn't believe it.
For free.

How do they buy the guns...?
Give all the boats RPGs see how the pirates like it
A few RPGs won't do anything, considering they have attacked military vessels. They failed miserably, but a few armed crew members won't do anything to stop the attacks. It's either we devote half our combined Naval forces to escorting the civilian ships, or we reinsert ourselves into the Somalian conflict.

If they have 5.5m for a ransom im sure they can spend a little less for a few guns.
They release one German tanker, then capture another one:

Didn't find an English source on this.
Why doesn't NATO just attack Somalia? Fuck's sake attacking them would make more sense than staying and fighting some stupid wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I mean it's just getting ridiculous now! 25 vessels with 587 hostages?? Not counting the countless ships and hostages that have gone through their hands

The UN couldn't win a war against them, these groups are all over Somalia and are far too powerful they'd never be able to stop them.
Blockade Somolian ports until the government has the competence to control its "Special" population.
Problem solved.
INB4 itsnotthatsimple

It really isn't that simple, as the pirate lords practically control the country.
Ok then.
Blockade ports. Begin the usual cycle known as war of throwing as many bodies as possible at the nation until it is scorched earth.
Ah fuck. It isn't that simple.
I plan on taking a group of volunteers with military experience down on a medium combat yahct with two helicopters and an array of 25mm cannons and M2s.
Bomb Somalia
Wow! Let's kill tons of innocent civilians because a few are pirates! And they have reasons to be pirates, you know - they're fucking poor as shit. How about you help them, not bomb them?

I thought it was a joke?
Why can't they just blow the shit out of anyone engaged in acts of piracy?
Why can't they just blow the shit out of anyone engaged in acts of piracy?
Because you make them martyrs and more and more people will resort to piracy (because they're poor) if an intense conflict broke out.
Guys, guys, they are pirates so they can afford to buy their music/software legally! Where do you think that $5.5m goes? It goes to Microsoft, iTunes!

I thought martyr's died for a cause, not because they're poor
I thought martyr's died for a cause, not because they're poor
Lots of militia groups in Somalia have causes - they're Islamists trying to appeal to the people. Pirates say they will get rid of waste along the shoreline and whatnot.
What I meant by something was continuing to put pressure and manpower in the waters around the area and just try to make it more and more secure.

Blockading the ports would probably create more money problems causing even more people to drive themselves to piracy.
Also Somolia... competent government... lol

This is probably the cheapest and most effective suggestion to the problem.
