The rules are simple: throw a ball into the goal to score a point. But what makes this game unlike any other is that all the players are armed and ready with stun guns.
It's Ultimate Tak Ball, the brainchild of a few hardcore sports fanatics who say it is the sport of the future and are in Bangkok for an exhibition game.
Each game consists of three periods that last 7 minutes each, with two teams of four players each. Any player in possession of the 61-centimetre (24-inch) ball is open to unlimited shocking by the players on the opposite team.
The game was thought up by friends Leif Kellenberger, Eric Prum and Erik Wunsch, who were trying to come up with the extreme of extreme sports when the idea of stun guns popped up.
Kellenberger said the guns produce a twitching feeling. He says, "Yeah, these are really low-voltage stun guns, these are UTB Tak stun guns. They're really, really low voltage, as you can see, I'll even do it to myself, you just get a little twitch. So nothing really affects you long term or the nervous system, nothing really affects your vital organs, especially your heart. This is what we play, it's a really low-grade taser," he said.
The stun guns pack 3 to 5 milliamps of electricity, which is only about 10 percent of the power of the taser stun guns used by police. Players on the current teams were all picked by the
founders and were originally paintball professionals who had been touring together for a while, and so were already accustomed to the agility and pain required in an extreme sport created for adrenaline junkies.
"I quit counting once I was on the ground and two people were stunning me a lot. Yeah, it felt like one continuous one, but there was probably, I don't know, 10, 15 individual ones," said UTB player Ryan Moorhead of the San Diego Spartans.
"It hurts, but it's not enough to stop you because your adrenaline is pumping, but it does not feel good. I probably got tased at least 10 times throughout the entire match," added Damian Ryan.
Some of those watching said they have a certain amount of respect for the players. "I don't want to say (they're) a crazy group of guys, but they've got what it takes to do it," said spectator Graham McDonald.
The recent game in Bangkok had very little downtime, with players moving frantically from one end of the field to the other, a constant buzzing from the stun guns heard throughout.
Kellenberger said although he did not expect the game to catch on this quickly, he knew he had to dream big.[/quote]
