Casimir Pulaski Day is a holiday celebrated in Illinois to commemorate the heroic actions of General Casimir Pulaski during the American Revolutionary War. It is usually used as a day to celebrate Polish culture in America, especially in and around Chicago, which has a large Polish population. Most public schools are closed on Pulaski Day. General Pulaski was a Polish military commander who fought against Russian influence on several occasions. After his attempts failed, he traveled to France and was recruited by Benjamin Franklin and General Lafayette to assist in the American Revolution. He was placed under the command of George Washington as a cavalry officer. At the Battle of Brandywine Creek, as the Continentals began to retreat, Pulaski noticed that the British were surrounding the American army. He gathered as many retreating units as he could and positioned them so that the army could retreat to safety. This action saved Washington's life, as he would have been executed for treason had he been captured. After assisting in many other battles of the war, Pulaski was authorized to create his own regiment, called the Pulaski Cavalry Legion. This regiment recruited anyone, from criminals to army deserters. Pulaski personally trained and financed his men so that Pulaski's Legion was one of the best cavalry regiments of the time. During a cavalry charge at the Siege of Savannah, Pulaski was wounded by grapeshot from a British cannon. He was carried away from the battle, but he later died of his injuries. His remains were buried Greenwich Plantation near Savannah, where he was buried. In 1996, his remains were exhumed and tested to see if they were actually his. He was later reburied with full military honors. Pulaski is one of the most honored people in American history. He has many of streets, parks, bridges, and even cities named after him. On November 6, 2009, president Obama signed a bill granting General Pulaski honorary U.S. citizenship, making him the seventh person honored. I hope everyone can celebrate Pulaski Day by remembering his heroic actions, or by thinking of and honoring any other national hero today. Happy Pulaski Day!
Thanks. :unsmith:

Sure. Pulaski was good, but I still prefer Dr. Crusher.
Sure. Pulaski was good, but I still prefer Dr. Crusher.
She wouldn't have been relevant to the thread though.
She wouldn't have been relevant to the thread though.
Perhaps so, but I was just stating my opinion. Should be Crusher day.
I remember when I got off school for today. Was pretty awesome. Nobody really knew why we did but no one was complaining.
Everyone always asks who Casimir Polaski is. I just tell them 'A dude bad enough to rescue the president.'
Perhaps so, but I was just stating my opinion. Should be Crusher day.
Dr Crusher day. Don't want to remember wesley.

They dont let just anyone into the military anymore. Even something as stupid as underage consumption, and you're out. No chance. :smith:
Wasn't this a song on a Sufjan Stevens album?
Dr Crusher day. Don't want to remember wesley.
Oh course. Who the hell wants to think about Wesley?
I wonder how many US Facepunchers are able to pronounce his full name properly.
I live in Illinois and I can tell you that nobody even knows today is Polaski day, or would care if they did. [editline]7th March 2011[/editline] And what schools in Illinois close for this holiday? Not any of the schools where I live. I've never had a Polaski day off, and I didn't even know it existed.
Kazimierz Pułaski
Wasn't this a song on a Sufjan Stevens album?
Yeah but the actual song itself has nothing to do with the man or the holiday, as far as I know.
I thought the title said Polski day. :frown:
I thought the title said Polski day. :frown:
that would be fucking terrible
Hurray. I got no school today. And people say war is bad...
I may or may not have masturbated a little to General Pulaski's picture.
Part of Route 40 (in Maryland) is called Pulaski Highway for him since his Cavalry Legion was mostly recruited from Baltimore.
