• A Brief History of Football. (Handegg for you Euros)

Well, it's not the entire history, but it's the most pivotal event for NFL-lovers and since the season is coming up (SEAHAWKS) I think this would be appropriate. In October of 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt convened an urgent summit meeting at the White House. The subject: college football. The game had become so brutal that more than one hundred student players had died. College presidents were disbanding teams. Several state legislatures were giving serious consideration to making football illegal.
"GET THE GAME PLAYED ON A THOROUGHLY CLEAN BASIS!"--TR to College football officials
TR was himself a fan (his son played football at Harvard), but he had a harsh message fr the men who ruled the game: Sooner or later the rising public outcry would force his hand. If they didn't change the rules to make football safer, he might have no choice but to ban it. Roosevelt's call for reform prompted the formation of a new rules committee to make major changes to the game. One committee member suggested an idea long advocated by legendary coach John Heisman: Legalizing the forward pass. That might open up the game, reducing dangerous mass collisions in the middle of the field. The New York Times called the idea 'Radical', and the head of the rules committee was opposed to it. Nevertheless it was adopted for the 1906 season, along with rules that outlawed holding and unnecessary roughness and required a team to gain ten yards (instead of five) for the first down. Though football purists decried the changes, they wound up making the game not only safer but also more popular than ever. Thanks to a play called by the president, football passed into a new era. College football's first forward pass came on September 22, 1906, when Saint Louis University quarterback Brad Robinson heaved the ball to Jack Schneider in a game against Carroll College. (Robinson later became Mayor of Saint Louis) Saint Louis coach Eddie Cochems, an unsung pioneer of the passing game was among the first to teach his players to throw the ball with their fingers on the laces to get a good, accurate spiral. The new rules legalized the forward pass but heavily restricted its use. The ball could not be passed within five yards of the center, it could not be passed to a receiver in the end-zone, and an incomplete pass automatically resulted in the other team getting the ball. Two famous football players? Everybody else must suck.
God I hope Seattle does better this season.
Two famous football players? Everybody else must suck.
I don't think today's football players would turn into presidents or any other important figures.
How can you sit there for a full hour watching men kick balls around. Something about it seems pretty :gay:

The Cleveland Browns are a bunch of bitches with no mascot.
My team has not had much success the last decade with anything, and before this decade we had a Super Bowl quality tailback. Who quit, no mind you. Atleast with Jim Schwartz we can remove ourselves from the NFC North basement. Go Detroit! but that's why college football is WAY better. All time winningest program in college football. Only DEFENSIVE player to win the HEISMAN. Go Blue!
As a brit, I admit I find American Football more interesting to watch. But Rugby players are a lot more polite than american footballers generally. They call the referee 'sir' and apologize if they foul.
Ravens are looking good this year. I think this time Flacco could lead them to the Super Bowl. He's been close twice, and now he has a top tier offense.

I think Aaron Rodgers has the potential for a Superbowl if they can get past comparisons to Favre. Also Ravens have much better run game.
Go Eagles?
