Obviously the internet being the internet, they saw and labeled that one as derp. Deciding to throw a bone to the 'brony' community they added it in as canon. So you're both right. Derpy or whatever was in the show before, but it was because of all the memes and emails from 'bronies' that caused it/he/she to be real.
