The owners of the Weather Channel are in advanced talks with IBM about the sale of its digital assets, according to sources close to the situation.
The Weather Company has been mulling a variety of such plans for more than a year, as has been widely reported, talking to a number of different parties about buying either parts or all of its troika of assets.
Those include: The product and technology division, which offers a range of digital weather information via apps and websites and also data sets; the television division, with the flagship cable property, the Weather Channel; and a large meteorological team, providing weather forecasting for a variety of consumer and also business sectors such as aviation.
Sources said that nothing may come of the discussions with IBM, but there is likely to be some transaction for the Weather Company in the coming months.
Why?

i guess weird watson ai fuckery
IBM is definitely the company I want to be giving me the weather

Yup. I'd trust IBM to mop up the mess NBC made and make it just as shiny as it was in 2000 (but finding another John Hope is going to be extremely tough, if not impossible).
I was first confused about Weather buying IBM, but then was even more confused of the fact its the other way around.

Hell, it and AT&T practically ran the world together during the 20th century. They do a lot of shit for a lot of people. They're still the 8th largest company in the world by market cap.

Market cap isnt... really a measure of size... it's a measure of stock value

They're one of the most important companies in tech, even if their role is more behind the scenes now

They're the 10th by number of employees then. Market cap is a good measure of size.
TWC is a joke of a channel right now anyways. The politicise most of their content that isn't straight weather.

I love their DEFCON-1 weather theme they have when shit goes down.

Great... another cluster fuck of presentations at work.
When IBM sorted some sort of deal with image scans from healthcare or something - at work they organized like an open days in halls for 2 weeks, there was literally a fuck tonn of people, guests were given food etc... while workers couldn't take that food as it's for guests.
Should've taken badge off and just pretend I am guest :v:
IBM turning the weather channel into a straightforward...you know, weather channel, would be nice
I would say this is a accurate rumor in terms of them wanting to buy the tech, IBM said in march they were doing a partnership, so I wouldnt be suprised if IBM liked what they saw in systems like the Intellistar and Weatherscan, and wanted to make use of those systems.
Now as for the channel, I doubt the The Weather Company would give the whole channel, however I could see NBC Uni selling its 50% part since they've been wanting to sell ever since cable providers started dropping TWC for Accuweather and the like.

You didn't even post the best storm alert theme. (2005 version by Stephen Arnold Music)

Even the Man Made Music version you posted isn't even the best, the best out of that package is the Severe Winter music.

Intel would probably give IBM a weird look if they liked the Intellistar (2 (Jr.)) so much that they'd buy all digital assets since it's apparently x86! But with 2nd gen Intellistars rolling out and the original Intellistar going bye-bye in November, it'd be piss poor timing if IBM were to snap up digital assets only to say "hey, let's just stick some POWER chips in whatever succeeds Intellistar". Hardware-wise, that'd be the only thing I could think of that IBM would want to do.

Well Intellistar 2s are finishing up their roll out, so I would say IBM would work on something like a new Weatherscan, hell I would love if TWC brought back Weatherscan systems on the air with some new hardware, be great if it was in HD with the "Weather All The Time" graphics style.
Also if we're talking all digital assets, maybe a new mobile app and website would be in the works? Their app/website is really bad in its current state, so if IBM could somehow improve on both then I would definitely use them again.
IBM's data driven, so they'd definitely trash most, if not all of the "CHECK OUT THIS RANDOM BULLSHIT!" drivel of today's weather.com.
i have all of the storm alert songs if anyone wants me to upload them

Sure why not

All things considered, a tech company like IBM is actually fairly well equipped to give you the weather. They have one of the biggest predictive analytics divisions IIRC

Sounds like YouTube rips, here's a few version directly from my 15 CD collection of TWC music.

It would be interesting to see how IBM could improve on TWCs try at a forecast for a whole month, I doubt it would improve to getting a whole month to 70-90% accuracy, but it would be cool.

no how, weather is a chaotic system.

A few are, the rest should be from the TV. TWC music releases don't include the storm alert songs.
