A Trip To the Moon is the world's first Sci-fi film. It was written and directed by Georges Méliés and made in France in 1902. It's a pioneering film, like aforementioned, the world's first sci-fi film. It's based upon 2 novels, From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne and The First Men on the Moon by H.G. Wells.
In my opinion, this film is genius. Expertly done and a true pioneer. The special effects in this film outdo James Cameron' shit anytime.
Can't believe I forgot to post the iconic picture taken from the film.

Cool movie.
Also surprisingly hilarious.
Why are the astronomers dressed as wizards in the beginning?

They were dancing Griffindors, and did you see their rocket designs! Fucking amazing.
The audio was added in at a later year, right? I'm pretty sure they didn't have audio integrated into films until the 20's...

That's probably just the music that was played during the screening.
They had people dedicated to sitting at a piano and playing music while the movie was going before they were actually able to get the sound into the movie itself.
aeiou
I must say it's pretty boring to watch.

Well, it was made more than a hundred years ago, back when moving images was a new concept. Anything that involved moving images was incredibly interesting to everyone then.

Yeah. The first "movies" of the Lumiére brothers (Who practically invented films) were, like simple recordings of a train arriving to a station, or traffic on the street, but everyone rushed to the cinema to see them, solely because motion picture was something never seen before.
Amazing.
Its even more amazing to think someone with a PC (or Mac) can whip up the same or better quality images in less than half the time, goes to show its not how good your camera is or how much explosions you have. Its up to a good story and great acting.

Yeah but all movies back then were silent. How could this particular one have sound.
I wish the moon had imps that would explode when touched by umbrellas...

they added it later. they do that with a lot of silents these days, sometimes it sucks.
like i watched The General (which is holy crap the greatest) a while back and it just had shitty public domain classical music as the soundtrack. but i also watched metropolis and it had a re-recording of the original score, it was awesome.
