• Gas Mask Filter Safe?
    19 replies, posted
Earlier today i went to a near by Joe's army surplus store for some stuff and i noticed that they had some Russian gas masks(GP-5) that look pretty awesome. so i asked the guy at the counter about them and he said ya they are real and they are in working condition, the guy seemed to know a lot about them and the store. The gas mask came in a plastic bag all packed up and to some means used but, refurbished. What i want to know is if its Safe to use the filter on the mask. There is a cap for the bottom and top parts of the filter and there was a sticker over the bottom cap filter that had Russian words on it. The filter seems a bit beat up but not to bad and it has the numbering 89(which is underlined) and under that is 457. I haven't try'ed on the filter with the mask but, i don't want to endanger myself over a stupid mask thats for fun. some of the old filters use to have asbestos in them.
If there was a screw on cap and a rubber plug in the bottom it's safe. They only become hazardous with use under extreme conditions, anyway.
Depends what era it is from. I remember bringing a WW2 gas mask into school as a kid and they made me remove it from the room because apparently the chemicals used in the filters can become toxic over time. If on the other hand you are wondering if the filter will still work against noxious fumes, then i seriously wouldn't trust it.
it was a plastic cap on the bottom with a long sticker on it, so its okay you think?
Well, it being surplus, it's most likely unused, so it should be safe.
Give us some pics of the filter. We might be able to help you better that way.
If it's older than 1970 then it might be harmful.
I wasn't aware that they have made asbestos filters since after WW1.

That was before we knew about the health risks. It's from 1989? If so it's safe. [editline]10:21PM[/editline] Post a picture of where you saw the 89 on your filter.
