Unreal Engine maker Epic Games doesn't want its name or logo associated with Hatred, the graphically violent massacre-style shooter built with Unreal Engine 4, and has asked developer Destructive Creations to remove Epic's logo from the game's trailer and other marketing.
"Epic Games isn't involved in this project," a statement from the company reads. "Unreal Engine 4 is available to the general public for use 'for any lawful purpose,' and we explicitly don't exert any sort of creative control or censorship over projects. However, the video is using the trademarked Unreal Engine 4 logo without permission from Epic, and we've asked for the removal of our logo from all marketing associated with this product."
Destructive Creations announced Hatred earlier today. The game's grisly trailer depicts the playable character slaughtering innocents civilians and law enforcement in an effort to rack up a high body count and "spread Armageddon upon society."
The game's debut trailer also uses Nvidia's PhysX logo. We've reached out to Nvidia for comment. We've also reached out to Destructive Creations' through its PR firm for comment on Epic Games' request.
I'll laugh my ass off if they spend all this time and effort making this trash and then nobody will publish it.
it's postal without the satire.
This isn't even Postal funny, it's just gimdark Linkin Park.
They just didn't like their logos on it what is the problem
Unreal tech has certainly never been used for depicting graphic violence before, so I don't blame them for not wanting to start now.
Don't understand the hatred of this game. Concept is probably the best I have ever seen in a long time. It's so ridiculously simple. Guy goes rampage and that's it. Only hope is that it has some variety.
It still looks fun.
Oh my god it's like School Shooter: North American Tour 2012 only as a proper game and without the satire.
I hope there are some underlying psychosis things, like weird sayings on the loading screens. and maybe some fucked up psychotic art. They also need Rick Hunter.
I'm pretty sure it's absurdly edgy on purpose
like it doesn't look like a remotely serious game
I wonder how much the police escalates, it'd be neat if the army and shit start turning up and the difficulty ramps up
The question you may ask is: why do they do this? These days, when a lot of games are heading to be polite, colorful, politically correct and trying to be some kind of higher art, rather than just an entertainment – we wanted to create something against trends. Something different, something that could give the player a pure, gaming pleasure. Herecomes our game, which takes no prisoners and makes no excuses. We say ‘yes, it is a game about killing people’ and the only reason of the antagonist doing that sick stuff is his deep-rooted hatred. Player has to ask himself what can push any human being to mass-murder. We provoke this question using new Unreal Engine 4, pushing its physics (or rather PhysX) systems to the limits and trying to make the visuals as good as possible. It's not a simple task, because of the game's non-linear structure and a lot of characters on the screen. But here at Destructive Creations, we are an experienced team and we know how to handle the challenge!
That's directly from their website.
Is it open world or does it take place in these levels?

According to the website there is 'seven free-roam levels'.

Well.... Someone woke up on the wrong side of bed...
That was fast.
Also, about the game, let me just copy over what I put in the trailer thread:

So you're upset about games making artistic or political statements rather than just being entertainment, so your response is to make a game about making a disturbing political statement rather than just being entertainment? Seems counter-intuitive.
While it might be fun I think you have to draw the line somewhere; I'm all for violence in games but when you make a game that is literally only killing innocent civilians, no parody, no humor, just the worst crime one can commit in real life in video game format I think you have passed it.
the people taking this seriously are pretty dumb
its clear this was made to make a point

Yeah but it's being made in a dumb way

I feel like the least you could do is make the people you're killing into random thugs instead of civilians. They have this thinly veiled deflection about how their game asks a deeper message, but it doesn't help when that message is preceded by saying this game gives the player "pure, gaming pleasure."
I mean, you can still throw killable civilians in there, but having them not be the entire focus and having combatants that fight back and give me a reason to kill them would actually prompt me to play the game. I mean as it is now, I might as well play JBmod and kill a bunch of NPCs with disabled AI for a couple of hours. The violence in, say, action movies is fun because the people getting killed had it coming. Even Hotline Miami has the thin justification of the guys being mobsters, and the fun of the gameplay comes from how tough they are.
I still think Epic are bitches about the situation though, and it seems really bizarre and hypocritical about them claiming these guys are "using the trademarked Unreal Engine 4 logo without permission from Epic" despite the devs having paid for a license to the engine that intrinsically entails the right (I think it might be a requirement for commercial games) to append the logo to whatever game they're selling. I didn't realize you could retroactively legally forbid that kind of thing at your discretion.

I think the product has to speak for itself when it comes to media: If I played this without reading the devs statement that it was a statement of some sort of point would I have understood that or would I think it was made by some guy who actually wants to commit mass murder? Judging by how they play it completely straight in the trailer I would say no.
If I made Rape: The Videogame and played it completely straight and later told people "lol jk I was just making a point" would it be acceptable?
someone call jack thompson oh no violence
I hope there is some kind of actually entertaining and redeeming gameplay mechanics that make the game fun being "One lone limey edgelord and his linkin Park CDs vs the world"
otherwise this IS postal without satire, and the fun part about postal WAS the satire.
"yo we're bored of all these ~artsy~~ gay games with their "messages" n shit so here is our game with NO message"
that's just a message in itself. why not just make a fun game that you're passionate about without a dumb political reason or, even worse, a political reason that amounts to "look how we don't have a political reason!"
fuck these losers
seriously who gives a shit it's a game
Polan y u do this
People seem to know so much about the game from a single trailer.
Excuse me... but how is this any different than some sort of edgy Hotline Miami minus the style?
it's postal without the satire.
As a number of people put it, it seems like it's pretty much Postal 1 rather than 2, right down to some of the gameplay elements. Killing people and blowing shit up for the fuck of it in a rather dark and dead-serious manner rather than making fun of basically everything.
