(Sept. 11) -- Barring intervention from the governor or Supreme Court, the state of Virginia plans to execute a woman later this month for the first time in nearly a century. Teresa Lewis, a 41-year-old grandmother with such a low IQ that she's classified as borderline mentally retarded, is set to die by lethal injection on Sept. 23. She'll be the state's first female prisoner put to death in 98 years. Lewis pleaded guilty to hiring two men to murder her husband and stepson in their trailer in Virginia's rural Pittsylvania county in 2002, in order to collect life insurance money. She took cash from her husband Julian Lewis' wallet as he lay dying from gunshot wounds and waited 45 minutes to call police, The Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported. But when sheriff's deputies arrived, Julian was still alive and told them: "My wife knows who done this do me," ABC News reported. The man died soon after. The two triggermen, one of whom Teresa Lewis was having an affair, got life in prison. But a judge deemed Lewis the crime's mastermind and called her "the head of this serpent," and sentenced her to death, according to Time magazine. If Lewis' sentence is carried out, it would be the 12th execution of a woman in the U.S. since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. The woman's lawyers are arguing for clemency, saying that essentially, she's too dumb to execute. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that executing a mentally retarded criminal violates the Constitution's 8th Amendment, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. But Virginia doesn't consider someone mentally retarded unless they score significantly lower than average on IQ tests, and also struggle to function in society. Sponsored Links Lewis' IQ has been measured as low as 70, but the Virginia Supreme Court and a federal appeals court have both rejected the notion that she can't function normally in society. Her plight has been taken up by Christian groups and a longtime prison chaplain, the Rev. Lynn Litchfield, who befriended Lewis behind bars. "It is my sincere belief that Teresa Lewis's life has merit to the Commonwealth of Virginia," Litchfield wrote in a letter to the governor last month, excerpted by the Virginian-Pilot. "She can be a positive force for good within the prison system helping other incarcerated women." Litchfield and other advocates have set up a website, SaveTeresaLewis.org, listing reasons why Lewis' life should be spared. They cite her apparently strong Christian faith, and how she's said to calm fellow prisoners by singing country gospel songs that echo across their prison cells. Fucking whore.
that's fucking retarded
Die die die! Kill kill kill! Death death death!
Why does the person who hires a hitman get a more severe punishment than the person who actually commits the murder Do you people seriously not see the fallacy in punishing a murderer less than a person funding a murder? Are you all this stupid?
...go us?
Die bitch
Grandmother at 41? Did she and her son both have children when they were teenagers or what?
They should execute all three of them.
Why does the person who hires a hitman get a more severe punishment than the person who actually commits the murder
Because the justice systems everywhere are fucked up and have been for a very long time.
Why does the person who hires a hitman get a more severe punishment than the person who actually commits the murder
It's like arresting a gun to be honest, they just did the killing, she was the one who asked for it. Although to be honest they should all get the same sentence in my opinion.
...go us?
Virginia Pride :neckbeard:
Why does the person who hires a hitman get a more severe punishment than the person who actually commits the murder
Because they probably don't know who the hitmen are.
Teresa Lewis, a 41-year-old grandmother
i know someone said it but jesus 41 year old grandma?
Hitmen don't kill people, bitchs do.
I think death is unjust here. Just jail her for life.
It's like arresting a gun to be honest, they just did the killing, she was the one who asked for it. Although to be honest they should all get the same sentence in my opinion.
You act as if being a hitman is a legal job.
Why does the person who hires a hitman get a more severe punishment than the person who actually commits the murder
Who do you think is more at fault, the (putting it lightly) "master"mind, or the pawn?
Virginia Pride :neckbeard:
I love Virginia, the state of Love, sadly it hasn't rubbed off on me yet :(
You act as if being a hitman is a legal job.
A day at the office: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGMat6zJg38
You act as if being a hitman is a legal job.
She was the main reason for their death, the hitmen wouldn't have killed them if she hadn't asked them to. they should still be put away for life though at least.
...go us?
Our generation of Virginians are changing history as we know it.
i know someone said it but jesus 41 year old grandma?
it's not that hard. My mom is 41 and my older brother is 22. He gets laid and has kid = mom is a grandma.
I love Virginia, the state of Love, sadly it hasn't rubbed off on me yet :(
I never understood the motto, what exactly about Virginia is for lovers. It's more for history buffs than anything else.
Eh, she should be killed anyway for being retarded.
Why does the person who hires a hitman get a more severe punishment than the person who actually commits the murder
Uhmuricah
The woman's lawyers are arguing for clemency, saying that essentially, she's too dumb to execute. .
Oh bullshit. She had two men killed for money, she knows full well what shes doing.
Eh, she should be killed anyway for being retarded.
She was borderline retarded not actually retarded, if she was retarded id rather they sent her to a mental institute.

I hate people that wish for someone to die because they are an abrupt failure and need money from the insurance. :colbert:
