The official, who has not been named, is believed to have worked at North Korea’s embassy in London for ten years. He is understood to have defected not to Britain but an undisclosed “third country”.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/08/16/north-korean-diplomat-serving-in-london-defects-to-third-country/
I'd defect too if my other option was working for a shithole.

Good for him.
I'm surprised the North Koreans don't have armed guards at their embassies, not to keep people out, but to keep the diplomats from leaving and defecting. They probably will now though.
Would the uk even allow that in a place like london
The UK won't even allow their Olympic Shooting team to practice in the country.
I'd defect too if my other option was working for a shithole.
North Koreans aren't allowed to work outside of North Korea with out family left behind as hostage. His family will end up in a concentration camp for this.
How does defecting work? Who do you declare that to?
I'm really entertained at the thought of a North Korean diplomat just tapping a security guard on the shoulder at the embassy and going "Hey.. My country sucks, who do I talk to about getting out?"
How does defecting work? Who do you declare that to?
If the movies are anything to go by, you basically walk in, go to the front desk, and say "I'd like to defect."
RIP his family.
And RIP his ass if they get him like they tried to get that overseas student in France. North Korea's fumbling around internationally, but they're more than capable of grabbing someone off the streets so no one ever sees them again in other countries.
How does defecting work? Who do you declare that to?
i dont think you get to a position like this if you're willing to defect completely on your own accord whoever he defected to probably had been scoping him out for some time based on some perceived vulnerability, wheedling and nudging him in that direction
RIP his family.
he could've lost his family back home that has pushed him to defect because there's little to no consequences now
RIP his family.
the article says his family is with him
the article says his family is with him
Maybe his not so immediate family could be forwarded onto him, bit by bit.
How does defecting work? Who do you declare that to?
This guy knew people from the uk gov. Probably he went to someone who's up in the ladder without warning beforehand. "Hey dude, I will be probably killed for doing this. Ive got good intel on NK business here in the UK. Wanna let me stay for a couple, say, decades?" "Yeah sure, come in" Aaaaaaand Defected.
Couldn't he just apply as a refugee? He's sure to get status, as he'd be punished severely if he went back.
