He's definitely not the type of guy that does reviews soon after a game's release.
overall i agree with what he's saying, genocide run was ultimately really boring and incredibly unfulfilled (and the message does feel pretty heavy handed) while the pacifist run had a lot of great moments and excellent characters.
i still recommend people to play undertale, but stick with pacifist really, character attachments aside genocide just isn't fun to play. and you can always edit your file to do the boss fights if you are curious about fighting them
I overall agree with Johnny's opinion here. Undertale is a great game but not "OMG GOTY!! BEST GAME OF ALL TIME!!" level of good. Even if he didn't like the game I would respect his opinion as long as he gave his reasons why and wasn't being contrarian just for the sake of being contrarian. With the genocide/no mercy run it's something you do once if you're curious but rarely if ever again (I can't bring myself to do it. I like the characters too much). I just hope the rabid parts of the Undertale fanbase don't give him shit because he didn't say it was the best game of all time and actually acknowledged the game's flaws. I also hope the rabid "anti [insert popular game/movie/book]" crowd doesn't give him shit because he dared to even utter the game's name.
I just experienced a series of strange events.
First I'm invaded by Hodrick, and I summon a white purple to help me out with him because lazy. As I do this, a red phantom invades, then he and the two purples start ganging up on my 3-1.
Well, Hodrick accidentally falls to his death, and I'm pounding shit in with my greatshield. Eventually, I start chugging and the two phantoms go after me, but the purple misses and accidentally backstabs the red, killing him and bamfing out after because he completed his objective unintentionally :v:
Oh this is the wrong thread.
Whoops

All you had to do was tell a joke and you could have just avoided all of that and spared all three of them.
The game is aight.
Obligatory

I don't even mind that he's late to the party. The game is either a hit or miss depending on what you like to get out of a game. The game hit a chord for me and it took me a while to [del]get over[/del] cope with the ending. I'm personally just waiting for an update to the game that will likely never come.

I think the reversal of how grinding (leading to genocide) actually makes the game way harder is super cool. Actually playing the Genocide run is a chore though, I watched someone else do it. [sp]The part where flowey calls out people who watch Genocide runs works way better if you're watching it.[/sp]
the whole point of the genocide run is its not supposed to be fun or fullfilling to win that route.
grinding like shitty JRPG hero is not fun and the route makes sure to get that across.
You are a sociopath asshole. You murder everyone just to feel more power. enjoy your hollow "victory".

maybe I'm shallow or whatever (and I haven't played undertale) but this sounds a lot like when people were like 'no yeah spec ops the line is supposed to be bad and not fun to play" and I think that is silly
granted if there is another way to play that's fine
There isn't really any point in having multiple endings to a game if you're gonna make some of the endings weaker than the others.
Genocide run is something that could have had the potential to be equally fulfilling in terms of story and gameplay, but ended up being the obvious lesser choice between the playthroughs.
It had the hardest/best two boss fights in the game, and explored large parts of characters that you don't get to see in Pacifist.
i don't think ill ever be able to ignore that stupid thumbnail
A bit disappointed he did not explain the story and tid-bits like in the earthbound reviews, he just ham-fisted the fact this is the first game ever to parody a genre where killing did not affect anything.
Salty Johnny.

To be honest, this review's a weird case. He doesn't want anyone going in blind to the review itself, but the game. So it's really for those who already played the game, instead of the story portion of a review being titled with spoilers like previous games out there. It'd be redundant as a result to really go over the plot synopsis itself. That and when people praise the game's graces up and down, I can see why he'd feel salty about the genocide route and how anvilicious the game is about it all. It does feel like the review was a bit under-detailed and rallied a little too much on that point though.
I wasn't blind to Undertale when I went in at the middle of October last year, I spoiled myself silly on it. But I still felt it was worth the trip through, and considered myself a fan for a while. Yet after a while everything surrounding it all become a bit of a gigantic mess, and now you can't criticize Undertale in any way without someone coming to its defense, yet you can't like Undertale because someone else will think you're a meme-loving faglord that should go burn in a fire.
Homestly I thought Undertale was god damn amazing. The story made me feel emotions up the butt, the writing was funny and had real uniue personality, and it was just refreshing amongst all the standard genre of games.
However saying that I did the Pacifist route once and never touched the game again. The first paythrough is solid but it has little replayablity. The Genocide route thing doesn't bother me though.
What the fuck is this terrible thumbnail art?
