FAST Website
I was reading this site and think they're actually doing a great job helping organisations instead of trying to force the job onto ISPs.
Why don't companies whining about software theft seek help here instead of whining about it? It's more efficient to invest in protecting their software than to let it be pirated.
You should all care about this aswell since I hear many people here wanting a career in the IT industry.
Stopping piracy would give the big companies a reason to lower their outrageous prices on some of the new games; they need the profits to continue developing games but if most of the gamers are taking their profits by using torrents how can this happen?
Atleast the website is fast.
Most people on this site are pro-piracy

They're only pro piracy because they can't afford everything they want; like the real world - people can't have everything they want so why steal it? It's just selfish really.

Not theft, but I agree with you.

I can afford the stuff I pirate and If I like something I buy it. I choose not to buy some stuff because it's crap and I feel like a company doesn't deserve my money if they made a bug filled mess.

Different terminology.

It isn't. Theft removes the original, piracy makes a copy.
To give it a real world example: I go into someone's house and they have a TV. I touch the TV and it copies itself. I take the copy and go home and use it. I don't sell copies of my copy, I don't sell my copy. I just use it. Did the original owner lose his TV? No. Did the company that made the TV lose a TV? No. But if I like the TV they gain a customer. Maybe next time I want a TV I'll go and buy one. Maybe I decide I want another TV and I go and buy it instead, because fuck these guys made a quality TV. Maybe my copied TV breaks, and because I like the TV they made, copy or not, I pay them to repair it.
[editline]26th January 2011[/editline]
Alternatively the TV is a piece of shit, in which case I didn't waste money on it and a business that makes shitty shit doesn't get money for their shit which may as well be a scam.

The point is that the company was meant to have gained profit for their development of the TV which you just took without paying. You can't honestly say you're going to pay for it now you've got it- you probably have photoshop and I highly doubt you paid for it.
I understand why people pirate, it all has become such a big business. There are tons of crap out there that really do not meet the standard of average quality for which you have to spent 'lods of emone' that isn't worth it at all.

That's nonsense. That's like buying a football but restrict others from playing with it because they have to pay for the development of said football. There is a huge difference between both and that's what makes the situation so delicate.

People pirate stuff because they dont want to give the money to the corporations. I dont agree with them, if you dont want to pay corporations then dont, but if you want to get something then pay for it, people worked on it and expect to be payed.
- welp nevermind-
I remember when Gmod 10 first came out and my friend said, "10 dollars for a fucking sandbox game! I will never pay for something that was free!" (Gmod 9) He pirated it, fell in love with it, bought it, made me play it at his house, I loved it, bought it, told my friends, and 2 of them also bought it.
I hate threads like these, just as bad as religious threads.

I want your car. I get an exact copy of your car.
which would you prefer?

Buy your own fucking car
Piracy isn't theft, nothing is lost, etc.

Why do we need all of these threads if they all turn into the same thing?
Buy your own fucking car
But what if the car is a piece of shit, why should I pay for something that obviously does not deserve my money?

I think this think raises some pretty good points. For both sides.
They're only pro piracy because they can't afford everything they want; like the real world - people can't have everything they want so why steal it? It's just selfish really.
If you couldn't afford it in the first place it isn't stealing, because it's digital, and infinitely copyable at no expense to the creator. The only time piracy is bad is when the person could have bought it but instead pirated it, because that's an actual lost sale. Let's face it, most pirates are kids who have no income other than their parents, so that's not a lost sale.
On the bright side, however, if the content is good it still gives the creators a good reputation.
[editline]26th January 2011[/editline]
People need to accept that this is the state of the media industry, and adapt accordingly, otherwise actual software buyers are just going to get slapped with invasive DRM measures and the companies are going to further ruin their reputation.

The company got the profit of the original. Someone had to buy it to crack it. And there are plenty of people that buy it anyway and plenty of people that pirate just to try it then buy it. So don't pull that shit. There is no business lost because if someone's going to pirate something for a reason other than to try it and make sure they like it, they weren't going to buy it anyway.

And games like Machinarium and World of Goo that had piracy rates up in the 80% were not good then?
Should companies use piracy:sale ratio as a guideline for how good the game is?
Honestly piracy interested me due to having a shitty computer and one day when I was 14 I wasted the 150 dollars I got for my birthday on computer games that didn't work.
Nowadays the economy doesn't help this.. but really didn't EA admit piracy doesn't hurt much? And that's why they didn't protect The Sims 3 like they could've? They stated there was little point as everyone pirating it spread the game like wildfire and people still bought legit copies, or stuff from their store.. so they just didn't protect it and used the same old easily broken security they've always had.

No. Developing new antipiracy techniques only reduces the amount of piracy for as long as it takes for someone to crack it. Which is normally within hours of release - so developing new protection methods aren't worth the time.
They missed an method to stop piracy.
Web of trust. Helps give rating info AKA: Stop scamming/pirated products.
This isn't a justification of piracy, but rather some food for thought:
I see piracy as theft, and it is illegal and can't really be justified. However, piracy seems to be more 'acceptable' to many people than, say, stealing a TV. I see this as actually quite reasonable when you consider that developers deem it 'acceptable' to release flawed software. Would you accept a TV that doesn't work properly? No, of course not. But developers release software with countless bugs in them and expect us to buy them. 9 times out of 10, not all the bugs are fixed. This isn't attack against developers, but merely to highlight that you can't equally compare software products against hardware products.
