• Gonna try shrooms

So I'm trying shrooms tomorrow with my friend and I was wondering if shrooms can trigger schizophrenia. I ask not because I'm certain I have it but because I MIGHT possibly have it, maybe. I don't think so, but here's why it's a possibility: When my uncle was younger, mid-twenties, he tried LSD for the first time and it set his schizophrenia off. Now he's old and still living in a mental ward, crazy and all. I've never gotten to really know him as a result. However, prior to taking the LSD, he was a completely normal person (according to my mother). No one suspected that he was predisposed to schizophrenia, not even himself. However, my brother and sister have both tried shrooms and LSD before, and nothing happened to them. And I myself have smoked weed and hash, and haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary (if that matters). So maybe it was just random that my uncle was predisposed to schizophrenia, and nobody else was. My grandparents never had any mental illness. In fact, my uncle is the only one in my family (both sides) who has been shown to have a mental illness. So it's highly unlikely, but still, it's possible. Going on, though, I am a bit unsteady. I get anxious pretty often, and sometimes have panic attacks (not bad ones). Is this a sign of anything? So, basically, should I be worried? Should I not try shrooms? Should I abstain from psychedelics in general? If you know anything about this, please let me know. Also, I have already consulted various sources to try and find information, but nothing has really shown up but "hurr dont have a bad trip!" I'm not asking how to avoid a bad trip. Thanks!
If nobody in your family has had schizophernia but your uncle (Not to mention the only way he really is connected to you is through your grandparents) then you should be fine. Also marijuana can also trigger schizophrenia, but you seem to be fine from it. [editline]5th March 2011[/editline] Also non-severe panic attacks aren't anything to be worried about when under the influence.
llol sounds like one of those crazy uncle stories that runs in every family dont go over 3.5 g dried ur first time, dont smoke too much weed and have fun. make sure set and setting are good and best is 1 to 2 recovery days
i am already a crazy uncle.
i am already a crazy uncle.
And we still love you <3
1-2 recovery days what the fuck is that? if you do them at night you might have a really slight off-feeling for a few days and depending on how "oh my god i can see the nature of reality" you are w/ your drug experiences you might have a pretty interestingly shifted perspective for awhile afterwards but there's no hangover or physical/mental inebriation afterwards at all. I mean I like not doing anything the day after shrooms just because it's kinda shitty being on shrooms and thinking about work or whatever the next day but it's not a hard and fast rule. Also giving recommended dosages is really disingenuous with shrooms. the amount of psylocibin in shroom batches varies so much that 1g of good shrooms could literally be equal to 10g of shit. Also different individual tendencies complicate stuff way further. Some people have had too-intense trips from like a gram (or even less, rarely) but personally 3g-4g has always been mild and sometimes unsatisfying, just barely noticeable. [editline]6th March 2011[/editline] I shouldn't say mild, I've been convinced that I've felt the energy flow of "god" or whatever in the ground and marvelled at the levels of ecosystems all around us and been blown away but there was never any sense of losing control or any intense body/visual/audio hallucinations.
Hey man, this is a good concern to have. First off, remember this is Facepunch, not Dr. Facepunch, so any facts, tips and/or advice we give can't be believe just because it was posted. Keep in mind that although some people MAY have the knowledge you're looking for and be able to help, there are also those out there who are willing to let you be injured just to make themselves laugh. That being said, you have to remember that shrooms ARE going to effect your brain, and like any drug, will alter the chemical balances currently in place (at least for the time said drug is present and/or active). I would personally guess that it IS in fact possible for shrooms to bring out an undiagnosed mental illness, and where a member of your non-distant family HAS had schizophrenia, there IS a possibility that it could be brought out in you too. Now I say that it could be brought out, but that doesn't mean that it WILL be. A bad trip would be much more detrimental to your health than a good trip would be, so when you read "Don't have a bad trip", that's probably some sound advice. You should try to avoid having a bad trip, and if you're afraid you're going to, or this fear of becoming schizophrenic is seriously scaring you, then you should probably avoid doing shrooms right now. Doesn't mean to never do them, it just means now might not be the right time. Always remember that shrooms are a drug, and like any drug, you should respect it. Drugs are powerful and can alter your perspective and/or change your life from just one use. I'm sure most everybody here has had a life-changing experience with drugs (Not saying a HUGE one, but one in general) and would agree. Research and find ways (as I'm sure you have already by the way you speak) to avoid having a bad trip. Above all, enjoy yourself if you do choose to do them. If you do not, that's okay too, because they'll always be there if you choose to in the future. Don't rush something if you're not sure about it, much like you wouldn't run into a cage with a dog unless you knew it was friendly and wouldn't harm you. Just my personal opinion of course though :)
yeah i would recommend convincing yourself, without a doubt, that nothing bad will happen before taking the shrooms. oh, and you wont die from shrooms, so that thought shouldn't be in your head ever. to be honest we cant really tell you if you're predisposed to it, or if it even it will or will not come out in you. just dont think about it if/when you're going to do them. there's a cleaner feeling to shrooms just because its natural imo.

I think I'll probably wait awhile before trying them, actually, because I just found out some bad news that's pretty hard to not think about, and I want to be in an overall good mood when trying it out. Also that schizophrenia possibility is really bothering me right so I'll abstain for a while. Thanks again!
As long as go into it with a positive outlook you'll be fine. Don't worry about any of that schizophrenia. Your mindest is the single most important thing when doing something like shrooms. Just be confident that you'll have a good time, and you will. If things start to go down the shitter, tell yourself that you want to have fun, and to stay calm. It's just a drug, and it's effects only last the duration of the trip itself, so why not enjoy them while they last? Keep all of that in mind and you'll have a blast. Have fun, dude. I hope it goes fantastically for you.

If you're feeling like shit and need a pick-me-up, I'd suggest Adderall :D [editline]6th March 2011[/editline] B-T-Dubs, I'm sober.
I'd suggest daytripping your first time whenever you do end up deciding to do them, if ever. Like if you can get a house or something to yourself for ~8 hours on a nice day that'd be perfect. Feeling inhibited and worried about getting caught on shrooms would kill a trip (I'd imagine, I haven't really had to worry). And do them with somebody you feel really comfortable with. Sometimes just exchanging words and laughing with someone will turn around shitty feelings.
And do them with somebody you feel really comfortable with. Sometimes just exchanging words and laughing with someone will turn around shitty feelings.
yes, i did it with somebody i could trust, but half way through the trip he bailed on me. this sent me on a emotional rollercoaster, but i had my ipod on me so i just listened to some jimi hendrix, which kept me good for the rest of the trip. so bring some good, happy entertainment if anything.

I always feel a bit muddled and dumbed down when I'm on shrooms than when I'm on LSD.
1-2 recovery days what the fuck is that?
You said it yourself man, everybody is different. It's better that he set aside the day after just incase he DOES feel long-term after effects than he doesn't, ya know? And recommended dosages are fine. Most people are the same when it comes to being effected, and a first timer taking any more than 1/8 is not the best idea. I know I personally only took a gram the first few times. I say between a gram and an eight is about right for the first time, IF you were asking for amounts, which he was not.
i recommend an eighth the first time you'll do things you don't normally do probably
And have an amazing time whilst doing them.
When I was on shrooms, I heard disembodied whispers or muttering when I was by myself, but it wasn't anything that I could interpret or understand. It was just annoying. I knew that they weren't real, so I just tried to ignore them. The best thing to do if you do hear anything is to ignore it.
I disagree about shrooms having a cleaner feeling. I always feel a bit muddled and dumbed down when I'm on shrooms than when I'm on LSD.
i see why you say that. i guess i have a clearer thought process on LSD. shrooms kinda make me feel dumbed down to a kids maturity level at times, buti dont really think of it like that while tripping. i more or less think of it like im having the best time of my life. but what i mean by cleaner is the fact that LSD is a chemical, so sometimes i feel my body is really dirty after taking it. shrooms doesn't give me that feeling. it may just be me though
