Hong Kong could be the best place in China, where, unlike Chinese mainland, civil rights, liberty of speech and other basic rights of humanity are well-protected. A few dacades have witnessed a democratic Hong Kong's prosperity. In 1997, Hong Kong was taken over by the Chinese Government. At that year, I was just six, ignorant, feeling quite excited over that event. As I am gradually armed with various knowledge of politics, I sensed that Hong Kong is going to utter corruption, converting my initial excitement to fears.
It seems that Hong Kong is enjoying autonomy from Chinese Government. However, the truth is that Chinese Government never stops interfering in Hong Kong government affairs. For example, the chief executive of Hong Kong was designated by Chinese Government, meaning that citizens of Hong Kong have no way to elect their prefered Chief Executive. To make things worse, the chief executive virtually has a close relationship with the interest groups that dominate China.Namely, the interest groups are actually taking control of Hong Kong as well.
This year, an earthquake hit Yaan, China on 23rd, April, causing considerable casualties. The Hong Kong goverment went so far as to propose to donate 100 million HK dollars to the earthquake-hit area. Such a ridiculous proposition! Should a government spend taxpayers' money on something from which its own people can never benefit? Apart from that, there have been various scandals of Hong Kong officials, sex, embezzlements and so forth. The worst of all, in some years, Hong Kong will be completely taken over by Chinese Government, eliminating the autonomy, signaling the start of complete corruption.
Anyway, I am pretty concerned about the future of Hong Kong. The people of Hong Kong are responsible for their future.God bless Hong Kong!

100 million HK dollars is only like 12 million US. That is a measly amount to donate to a disaster area of your own (if you like it or not) country.
So its hardly ridiculous.

It is absolutely ridiculous. Hong Kong is basically a city, not a nation that has strong industries, agriculture. Therefore, 12 million$ is not trivial money because it entirely comes from taxpayers. Moreover, such money could be used to tackles some severe problems ordinary people in Hong Kong are faced with everyday.
Hong kong made 263.3 billion USD last year.
My dad is building a single school in Hong Kong that costs more than 12 million USD.
I suggest you educate yourself about your own territory before you start having massive opinions about it.

Also, Hong Kong tops all western countries in foreign reserves except for Switzerland.

According to your logic, one can squander money as long as he or she is rich, right? You know what, many people in Hong Kong were strongly against this proposition to donate money to Yaan and they clearly knew why. Yaan was supposed to get aid from Chinese government, who was responsible for the reconstruction and restoration, instead of Hong Kong government. Besides,100 million HK dollars could do huge good to the local people, enhancing their own well-being.
that proposition didn't go through after all!
PS: 263.3 billion USD is impossible!
ask the British government to buy it out when the contract expires

So where did the prosperity you mentioned in the OP come from?
[editline]12th October 2013[/editline]
And not that it especially matters but in your previous thread you identified as being from the mainland?
donkey kong

I don't mind spending our money to help relief the mainland in the case of natural disasters.

Many HK'ers are unhappy that China is slowly eroding everything away that makes Hong Kong, Hong Kong. Why should he feel any loyalty to mainland China when the Chinese government is so keen to fuck em' over?

They want to exploit the area as much as they can to benefit the nation as a whole. At least they understand the reason behind HK being an economic powerhouse and aren't trying to transform it.
I bet if Hong Kong was hit with a natural disaster you'd be one of the first demanding relief money from mainland China OP
Like it or not, taxpayer money often goes to help other taxpayers when they need it
I don't mind spending our money to help relief the mainland in the case of natural disasters.
Chinese government is the least organization you should donate your money to. Those 100million HKD donation was suspended because many sober Hong Kongers knew it could have been embezzled!! By the way, I, on behalf of the people who suffered from that earthquake, appreciate your generosity!
hong kong is pretty

Well, actually, I am a Chinese Mainlander. If Hong Kong were afflicted by disasters, I would be the first to donate my money to individual Hong Kongers, instead of any sort of charities. 'cause virtually they are under no surveillance of citizens. People constantly query where the hell my donation goes to.
So what was your point about not having industries or agriculture?
Without them, Hong Kong has to import those life necessities from Chinese Mainland.‘cause it cannot sustain itself for days without importation. Even the fresh water comes from mainland China. The point I want to make is that life in Hong Kong is not easy.100million HKD could improve many facilities so that HKer's life could be easier. It couldn't be some trivial money. Therefore the government should ask permission from its people before deciding its use. I tell you a truth, this proposition was opposed by thousands of Hong Kongers and finally aborted. So I was actually trying to refute the point NoDachi made.
My roommate (who's local) was talking about corruption here the other day. According to him the government isn't corrupt, it's just that Chinese influence is starting to leak over.
Im going to let your glorious leader Kim Jong-un know you're talking bad about him and his country.

Mainland China is corrupt beyond belief. That corruption is probably leaking over too.

I'm confused, if you live on the mainland then why are you so concerned about what Hong Kong does with its finances and government?
New zealand is least corrupt, as it appears. It's not that far from HK, you should move there OP. The country is times larger than HK but fewer people live there.
I'm confused, if you live on the mainland then why are you so concerned about what Hong Kong does with its finances and government?
HK has traditionally been a refuge for mainlanders wanting to escape from the mainland.
HK has traditionally been a refuge for mainlanders wanting to escape from the mainland.
But his flag shows China, not HK. Though I guess that could just be a fluke with the flag program.
Hong Kong sending aid to other parts of China? That's not really unusual. If you've suffered a disaster, it's not unusual for completely different nations to contribute to rebuilding.
they're not even different nations.
I'm confused, if you live on the mainland then why are you so concerned about what Hong Kong does with its finances and government?
Don't be confused man. I'll explain. Hong Kong, despite being a part of China since 1997, is a place teeming with people coming from throughout the world. In a sense HK doesn't only belong to 7.13 million HKers and 1.3billion Chinese but also people all over the world.Besides, my girlfriend is studying in HK right now. So I hope HK will continue its prosperity and shun any corruption. Nevertheless, I've seen some undesirable changes about HK, which naturally bothers me greatly. Now I believe your confusion is gone, my man.

That's a brilliant suggestion! New Zealand is a perfect place to reside in apart from some shitty earthquakes.

Not politically, but if you lived here you'd definitely be able to tell that it's not even close to the mainland
