A prisoner who was held in solitary confinement for two years has been awarded $15.5m (£10.3m) in compensation.
A court in southern New Mexico reached the record settlement to end Stephen Slevin's long-running legal battle over the case.
He was never brought before a judge nor convicted of any crime.
But he was so neglected that his toenails curled around his foot and he developed fungus on his skin because he was deprived of showers.

You're an idiot
15.5 million can't erase the trauma, but it can certainly help distract you.
Well. That amount of money would set any smart person for life.
I'm surprised that he's still sane after two years in solitary confinement.

This is someone who clearly doesn't have the slightest clue how mentally destroying solitary confinement can get.
15.5 million of.. Tax money? Police always finding a way to waste the money we pay them.
Someone should have at least been fired.
We have a serious problem with our prisons in the US.

You wouldn't last a week.
He got 2 years in solitary for drunk driving? And never brought to a judge.
And now he's free. With lung cancer, mental illness and $15m dollars.
No money in the world will make this clusterfuck any better.
When you attempt to kill another inmate in prison, you get two to four weeks in solitary. And that is seriously enough of a deterrent to keep most people from fighting. Imagine two whole fucking years!
There was a short story about a guy who stays in solitary for 15 years for a bet. At the end, he resented every single thing he ever lived by, including the money he so strived for. Solitary is crushing.
I don't think I could suffer through solitary confinement for a week, let alone 104 weeks.

someone should have been charged criminally
When I was at university I spent an afternoon at a prison during which time I attempted to beat waterboarding and solitary confinement.
Needless to say, it didn't end well. Even three hours in solitary is enough to make me not want to go back ever again, not even for all that money.
Gotta love their reason for appealing the original compensation "but....but, he's a bad bad man, just look at how long his arrest record was. Who cares if we treated him terribly?"
Crime doesn't match the punishment. And the punishment [length] doesn't exist under normal circumstances.
What the hell did he do to have anyone even consider throwing him in solitary? I mean either he did something or someone in the system had it out for him.
How about we put the people responsible for this mess in prison?
Give me a good bed and i'd do weeks of solitary with no problem.

This is clearly someone who takes life far too seriously and cant identify a joke.

could you do years with no problem?

I'd say it's far from half of the site that has such severe social anxiety, but that's certainly more valid then "No life nerds!!!!"
Is your buttocks in pain?
Epic joke dude

Was anyone out looking for you? Thats terrifying, I probably wouldn't have made it 5 days.
Am I the only one who wouldn't go insane in solitary confinement. Even for so long? It's odd but I like enclosed spaces. Hell, the worse that would happen to me is a severe and painful case of extreme boredom.
Rate me dumb but 15.5 Mil for 2 years is pretty damn good if you ask me.

It's not the same as being in a dark room for a bit. It's considered by many as a form of torture; prisoners sentenced to solitary have reported hallucinations, memory loss, difficulties in communication, among other things. Until you've experienced it you don't know how long you're going to be able to cope with it.
Did it never occur to anyone to let him out while bringing him food? Cruel.
