The game's official site just went live with a smattering of gameplay details, as well as insight into the philosophy behind Mars Effect's name. "After several weeks of trying to come up with a good name for the game, we finally decided not to learn from previous experiences and pick a name that's already kind of in use by a huge existing franchise," says Notch. "After playing around with names like 'Elight,' 'Wind Commander,' and 'Steve Online,' we finally settled on the very catchy name 'Mars Effect'." The game's bulleted list of features includes things like "waist high walls" and "a game ending that makes sense," among other things. Notch also outlines the game's "fixed wattage" system: All ships produce a finite amount of energy, and your ship's features require specific amounts of power. Activating a cloaking device, for example, requires so much power that other ancillary systems like computers and lights must be shut down in order to free up wattage. Each ship is also equipped with a fully emulated 16-bit computer, which "can be used to control your entire ship, or just to play games on while waiting for a large mining operation to finish."
http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/31/notchs-new-space-game-is-called-mars-effect/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=auraoo The official website. MINECRAFT

Go on some more vacations, Notch.
Well played, Notch. Well played.
Bit early for April Fool's jokes in the Northern European timezone. Still only 22:40 here.
I cant take Notch seriously at all. Funny though.
I can see the lawsuits coming already...
Oh wait fuck almost got me
I wanna see how many people believe this.
so how long will it take before mass effect tries to sue him for having a name so similar.
"a game ending that makes sense" Gee I seriously hope that's not a 8-bit version of 4th color.. or knowing Notch and his laziness, it'll just be one ending with no colors
EA give him permission to do this so I don't think anyone will be suing anyone.
so how long will it take before mass effect tries to sue him for having a name so similar.
I wasn't aware games were legally recognized as people that can sue.
I think the only joke is the game name, he's been talking about this game for days and it seems pretty legit. Also, this is actually pretty exciting:
Each ship has a generator capable of producing a fixed wattage, and everything you connect to it drains wattage. A cloaking field, for example, might require almost all the power from the generator, forcing you to turn off all computers and dim all lights in order to successfully cloak. The computer in the game is a fully functioning emulated 16 bit CPU that can be used to control your entire ship, or just to play games on while waiting for a large mining operation to finish.
kind of an unnecessary jab at ea, he's directly taking the piss out of them and "a game ending that makes sense" is kind of a low blow coming from a games developer to another
Okay now he's doing it on purpose :v:
Go on some more vacations, Notch.
That joke really got old.
Personally this is exactly the kind of game I have been waiting for. ( as long as it is not a pixel game ) I hate these games where you just sit in a view outside your ship flying around doing the norm. I cannot wait to see how this turns out.
April fools obviously.....
Time to make VacationCraft.
April fools obviously.....
Hopefully not but a possibility.
EA can sue! They trademarked 'effect'!
April fools obviously.....
yeah but it's a bad joke
EA can sue! They trademarked 'effect'!
Copyrights don't just come down to the use of a word. You can sue for likeness.
I think the only joke is the game name, he's been talking about this game for days and it seems pretty legit.
I wonder if EA's gonna try to get up in arms about the naming, since it sounds similar to one of the IPs they've wrapped their greasy tentacles around. Nonetheless it's cool to see that Notch is making a space sim.

I can already see the people confusing the two games and going no I am not playing Mars Effect everyone said the ending sucked.
Don't care what anyone says, Notch is still awesome even though Minecraft's ending is the biggest piece of shit ever
Don't care what anyone says, Notch is still awesome even though Minecraft's ending is the biggest piece of shit ever
Minecraft as it stands is a pretty big piece of shit regardless of it's ending.
Knowing Notch, by the time the game comes out of Alpha we'll actually be on Mars
