One secret of Trump's low-cost campaign: free labor
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has run an unusually cheap campaign in part by not paying at least 10 top staffers, consultants and advisers, some of whom are no longer with the campaign, according to a review of federal campaign finance filings.
Those who have so far not been paid, the filings show, include recently departed campaign manager Paul Manafort, California state director Tim Clark, communications director Michael Caputo and a pair of senior aides who left the campaign in June to immediately go to work for a Trump Super PAC.

Many campaigns have volunteers who work as low-level ground troops, knocking on voters' doors and passing out campaign buttons. There are instances in other campaigns of senior staff opting not to draw a paycheck. For example, John Podesta, a longtime adviser to Clinton who is now her campaign chairman, considers his role honorary and does not draw a salary.
What is unusual, however, is for a campaign to have such a large group of people in top positions who are unpaid.

Everyone has volunteers, but do read the quote from the article:

That explains so fucking much about the Trump campaign.
He's literally getting what he paid for - nothing at all.
This is why is campaign is such trash and the leadership for it has an incredibly high turnover rate.

Still why is it news worthy that people of high professional stature has opted not to work for money?

Because it contrasts with other campaigns going on now and in the past did you not read the quote.
Learn this one weird trick to run cheaply for President while pissing your campaign staffers off at the same time!
At this point is anybody honestly surprised?

It's something that is highly unusual and pertains to the campaign of one of the two people who have a serious chance of becoming the next US president?
It's also information that comes in handy in discussing the dynamics of his inner circle and how his campaign is managed in general, as this is not the first instance of things being run cheaply.
Here's an alternate view: his staffers aren't in it for the money and are in it to get Trump elected. Its a cause they care about that they are willing to work without payment from the campaign.
And this is just speculation but I would imagine the top staffers have other forms of income and are doing quite well already.

Exactly, if anything personally it would give me more confidence in trump if highly trained professionals are willing to work free for a cause they believe in.
Yeah favours could be done but you dont really need to incite people to work for free when your super rich.
The campaigns response makes me doubt the altruistic motivations
The Trump campaign said the Reuters' reporting was "sloppy at best" but declined to elaborate.
Maybe a more detailed one would come out later but you'd imagine that if they were doing it for free out of good will they would just say that.

Generally people in top level positions who work unpaid often expect something else in return for their work from the candidate when they get into power
Breaking news: national political movement relies on unpaid volunteers. Big whoop.

What could Stephen Bannon hope to get by working for free?

More like the heads of a campaign are hoping to be compensated in other ways

You Trumpets deride Clinton for her nepotism and you applaud Trump for it.
Could you be more openly two faced

Is that why so many of his top staffers have quit?

Did you bother reading the thread at all?
This isn't just regular volunteers. This is the campaign leadership.
Still why is it news worthy that people of high professional stature has opted not to work for money?
most campaigns have 1 or 2 high level people unpaid, not litterally the number 1 and 2 and most of the others below them
