Haven't made a thread in forever, looking for some constructive criticism on my photography over the last year or so.

You can find many more like this and HD versions on my Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sameiru/
And for goodness' sake ask me before you use any of my photos anywhere! (profit or non-profit)
Cheers,
Sam.
You could use more different angles. Most of them, in particular the action shots, are just straight forward shots. Try different angles like from down to up and stuff.
Pretty much what DD said.
Also, you're kind of at the point where no one can really tell you how to make your shots better. That's something you gotta work out on your own. Just practicing frequently should help you develop a taste and style.
I think you should start a 365 project. I added you on flickr, btw.
The last shot is my favorite... So subtle, but beautiful. It's hard too explain really.
The only thing I can really think of is maybe using photo editing software to increase the contrast levels or colour levels.
Other than that, excellent work.

I do use GIMP to edit them, and I specifically go out of my way to make sure they're not raped with contrast or colour distortion.

That's good.
Nice pictures and oh my god I need your bike.
Cheers for the feedback guys, here's two of my most recent photographs :)

Where abouts in Australia?
What do you shoot with? and what lenses do you primarily use?

This one would be great if the angle was lower.

Adelaide, around Unley.

I'm currently shooting with a Nikon D60 with the stock 18-55mm non-VR. I should probably save up for some more equipment...

Believe me, we did that shot roughly 10-15 times and the low shots looked like garbage. I think it is framed better by the background landscape at that height v:v:v
couple of things I picked up on:
1) have a look at using a shallower Depth of Field (lower your aperture) and try to get some shots wwhere you isolate the rider with much of the rest of the scene out of focus, i find that in some of your photos the subject gets lost in the background.
2) either completely freeze the rider with a really high shutter speed (eg 1/1000) or completely blur them (1/15), some of your images have the subject "half blurred" which I'm not a big fan of.
3) in the images where there is a half blurred subject what could really bring them back is second curtain flash. That means the flash fires as the shutter is closing, causing the blur to create trails behind a (hopefully) correctly exposed moving subject.
4) finally, something you could play with is doing some sequence shots (I made that name up)

for example in this image I had the camera on a tripod and walked along the footpath, some of the best skateboarding ads I have seen are a wide angle lens next to a rail and you see 4-5 copies of the skater as he is at various stages in the grind. I love an image like that because it incorporates the aspect of time, which is very hard to do with a still image.
I know that what I said is more ideas on what you could do as opposed to comments on what you have done but I find that at times that can be as, if not more useful to your progression as a photographer

Cheers for the feedback, but some of those points are treading the fine line between advice and opinion. I'll address each point induvidually
1) I have done many photos like this, and they end up looking worse in my opinion. Also if you look at most magazine photos, they also use a narrow aperture. IMO Super Bokeh = equivalent to filter rape.
2) The half blurring is to keep in most of the details and maintain that it's actually a guy riding a bike, rather than a patch of blurred colours, been there, done that (See: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sameiru/4546207337/sizes/l/)
3) I know it's hard to see (I'm still using the built in flash :<), but I actually did use this technique in photos 5 and 7 from the top.
4) Been there, done that many times over (See: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sameiru/3261900883/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/sameiru/3214601311/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/sameiru/3499536801/), honestly I'm tired of doing it and seeing it. I like to variate.
This isn't really meant to be an attack, just more of saying that I'm happier with the photo if it's what I like rather than what you like.
Your bike photos capture the moment so perfectly it hurts. Loving your work and looking forward to seeing more :)
