Matt DeHart, facing child porn charges in the U.S., is seeking asylum as a refugee in Canada. A months-long National Post investigation finds there may be some truth to the DeHart family’s claims that the charges are a cover-up; that the Americans
tortured Mr. DeHart; and that they actually wanted him for spying, after he obtained government documents as a member of the hacktivist group, Anonymous.
“They think of WikiLeaks like Al-Qaeda,” he said of the U.S. government. “I needed to move away from it all. I [still] talked to a few people on the computer but I generally completely disassociated myself with anything to do with Anonymous.”
“They started asking me questions. They started with people in my military unit, what the connection was between them, me and the Russian embassy; and then started asking me about connections between people in my military unit and Anonymous.” They also asked about WikiLeaks, he said, fuelling Matt’s belief his link to the Internet’s most prominent hackers and whistleblowers was driving his predicament.
“This lasted a long time. They wouldn’t let me leave. I wasn’t charged with anything, they said, ‘We’re questioning you for national security.’ They didn’t ask me a single thing about child pornography. That was not even a peripheral concern of theirs,” Matt said.

anonymous is still a thing?
To me, I'd feel like I'd need a suicide plan if I was part of something like Anonymous and living in the US and was about to get caught. Those motherfuckers don't mess around. If they had a lead like this in a big "hacker" organization, you bet your ass they'd torture you until they had every single little detail they need.
Tin-foil hat on or not, it wouldn't be a surprise if this guy ended up disappearing. Pretty sure everyone and their mum knows that the US gov. acts like fucking terrorists themselves when it comes to people they label as "terrorists".
how was he tortured?
how was he tortured?
Probably beatings and water boarding. Its like the two most common ones we use.
how was he tortured?
painfully
how was he tortured?
The article is insanely long and is actually split up into multiple parts, but it's definitely worth the read. There's some crazy shot going on here, but if you want to skip to the torture part, start here http://news.nationalpost.com/matt-dehart-claims-fbi-tortured-him-and-grilled-him-about-anonymous-and-wikileaks/
That evening, an agent showed him a criminal complaint — drafted only that afternoon — accusing him of soliciting the production of child pornography in 2008, according to both Matt and FBI records.
“I looked the guy in the eye and said, ‘I didn’t do that,’ and he said, ‘I know,’ ” Matt claimed.
Shame that I could believe that this was true.
anonymous is still a thing?
I've said this before, there's two different (major) Anonymouses. One is an imaginary scapegoat hackers use when they don't want attention, and the other is a poorly organized slacktivist group that often confuses themselves for the imaginary scapegoat that the aforementioned hackers created.
There's apparently other politically-motivated groups that use the name anonymous due to the notoriety and confusion that the name brings, but they tend to be smaller and more organized. This guy was probably a part of one of those.

Well, if his story is true, then in ways that are known to be used by intelligence services.
On Aug. 6, 2010, Matt DeHart was taken from a cell inside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s detention centre in Calais, Maine, after crossing from Canada, and led to what looked like a medical office, he said. Steered past a bed covered by a long sheet of white paper, he was pushed into a seat resembling a dentist’s chair.
“Another guy comes in, in a lab coat,” Matt said, his words coming in short bursts between deep inhales of air. “They sat me down in this chair, forcibly took my arm and they gave me an IV. Seriously, they held my arm down and stuck me with an [intravenous needle].”
He thought they were just drawing blood until the man in the lab coat hooked up a drip bag, used for administering fluids, not drawing them out.

In between interrogations, he was kept in a dry cell — with no sink or toilet — and not allowed food or water. He was told to defecate in a drain on the floor, but when he did, guards yelled and poured bleach over him, he said. All he was offered was Kool-Aid, used to wash down pills. If he didn’t take the unknown pills, he didn’t get to drink.
Bright lights were always on and guards banged on the cell every 15 or 20 minutes, making sleep impossible. Once, they took him to a back room and strapped him naked into a “submission chair” with a bag over his head, he said. He later found burn marks on his arm, he assumes from a Taser but he isn’t sure.
Matt said two “serious guys” from Washington questioned him for hours and the only time he got to eat was during these interrogations.
“They brought a Coca-Cola one time, brought fruit, cold fruit, another time, and they brought a Baby Ruth candy bar a third — that’s how I remember that there were at least three times I was interviewed.

wow. fuck. that's really fucking horrifying.
If he thinks he's a member of anonymous, he's not a member of anonymous.
Well if you read the article you'd know he was actually involved in several of their biggest raids like the one on the Church of Scientology
It's like we live in the damn USSR, its unfortunate that we sat idly by while the Bush & Obama administrations and Congress circumvented the constitution to keep us "safe" from terrorism.

This is some 1984 type shit.
you mean these guys?
I don't think you know what you're talking about.
It wouldn't surprise me if they did things like this it seems like if anyone is terrorists its the government. First Edward Snowden and now this guy from Anonymous. The government just doesn't want their dirty laundry aired out. People don't understand that the government only has their own private agendas as top priority and since they think they can do anything (no one has the balls to stand up to them... Myself included). Something needs to be done different but a revolution is to violent but something needs to change because I personally don't like the idea of big brother breathing down everyone's neck unless they have a legitimate Court order to do so.
“They think of WikiLeaks like Al-Qaeda,” he said of the U.S. government.
well wiki leaks did actively try to recruit mentally unstable people in the u.s. government and military to turn them into spies, manning being a notable case, so its not that unfounded of a fear

still getting on the NSA and CIA's radar is bound to get you in some nasty places

Are you referring to her Gender dysphoria? I really don't see how that's related to anything.
how was he tortured?
They withheld his child pornography from him.
Are you referring to her Gender dysphoria? I really don't see how that's related to anything.
gender dysphoria could really make a person unstable and more likely to be convinced to spy if offered help in exchange (e.g. money for hormone therapy or an operation)

I recommend reading this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Men_Who_Stare_at_Goats
US interrogation techniques have become rather odd at times in order to avoid "torture", but the application of this sort of thing- drugging, sleep deprivation, waterboarding, etc- are more common than not because they're considered at best "enhanced interrogation techniques" and at worst "soft torture". Instead of bodily damage, they often use mental and psychological torture instead. Recall, for instance, that Manning was held in solitary completely naked for over a month with only an hour daily for any sort of human interaction.

Still sounds like torture. That shit is made to damage you and it does.

And what does this accomplish? They spill the beans or something?
And what does this accomplish? They spill the beans or something?
It causes immense psychological stress, which I'm assuming you can tell is extremely unpleasant. In situations where people really get inside of your head and fuck up your mind, you'll do anything to make it stop.
There are plenty of instances of people confessing to crimes they didn't commit to make "interrogations" and tortures end.
