he BBC has refused to apologise to Argentina over a Top Gear special filmed in the country. The show's stars and crew had to abandon filming last month amid angry protests over a car number-plate that appeared to refer to the Falklands War.
Argentine ambassador Alicia Castro met BBC Director of Television Danny Cohen this month to demand a formal apology.
In a letter to Ms Castro that has been made public, Mr Cohen said the BBC would still broadcast the programme.
He said: "I am very aware that some have questioned whether the number-plates were in some way a prank.
"I would like to reassure you again that nothing we have seen or read since the team returned supports the view that this was a deliberate act." However there was no explicit apology.
Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson said he was "shocked" when someone pointed out the link between the number-plate and the Falklands War when they were days into filming.

Mr Cohen said that when the show is broadcast, the corporation would "ensure that these programmes are a fair representation of what took place throughout their stay."

Meaning they will broadcast their trip to Argentina including when they got attacked
Argentina got in a war and lost, it's the gov the ones that are butthurt not the people. I'm sure most Argentinians didn't gave a single fuck about the number-plate.
Holy shit, I expected this to get cut to all hell and some bullshit forced apology to be made, but BBC are sticking to their guns.

Peoples relatives died in that war, the brits sank a retreating ship of course people will be upset if you drive round mocking them for it. Sure the argies were idiots for trying it on and are idiots (government not most of the people) now for still causing a ruckus about it still but the top gear team purposefully tried to stir shit about it, they've done it before and will do a thing like it again.
The BBC only cares about complaints from its own country, it seems. If it's from its own country however then it'll listen to anything it seems.
Cry more you Argie bastards
Was it actually a reference to the war or was it just a coincidence?

Pretty much, BBC is more liable when it comes to national broadcasting, when it comes to international cases they are very lax about it. It's why the BBC international page tends to be pretty good because very little is filtered.

Except they didn't do it on purpose, the plates weren't even fucking close to the right numbers.
Also why the fuck wouldn't you shoot at a retreating ship, it's either still shooting at you while running away, or it will just come back another day and shoot at you.
Was it actually a reference to the war or was it just a coincidence?
From what they are saying, its coming across as coincidence however I'm sure theres some dark humor going on in the background.

you can't possibly be laying the blame on Top Gear
I'd say it's pretty close, but it's still overreacting about some license plates, and you cant prove it's on purpose since it's doesn't outright say "we kicked your ass in the Falkland war"

Can't tell if you are serious.
They're practically "lad banter with cars" They've been purposefully insulting/innuendo in the past, including number plates, its not outlandish to believe they would try a similar trick in argentina.

Nope just a brit who thinks top gear know what they are doing when they do number plate tricks, swearing on cars, insulting the locals etc.
Also consider that most argies don't care about the falklands. ITs just the gov using it to distract people. The reason people would get upset is because family members died and its pretty inconsiderate to them.
I still don't understand why bbc should be apologizing. They were the ones getting stoned by a angry mob which was purposefully looking for a reason to get angry

And from what I've heard, none of the people doing the stoning has been charged.
They owe billions in bonds which is crippling an already non-existent economy. The Argentinian government needs as many distractions as it can dish out.
I'm sure when they found out the controversy magnet that is Top Gear drove into Argentina they couldn't believe their luck.
Normal people living there seem to be alright though.

Yes. But they don't joke about dead soldiers.
the brits sank a retreating ship
The ship was a military vessel acting under orders from a hostile nation that had invaded British territory in the prior month. This would be like arguing that American planes aren't allowed to attack a Japanese ship retreating from Pearl Harbour.
yeah you can't prove it WAS on purpose
you can however pretty much prove that it WASN'T
I assume that by this
mechanically checked for time-bombs
they mean they made sure that the car is guaranteed to break down at the most inopportune time for May/Hammond. :v:
Was it actually a reference to the war or was it just a coincidence?
They said it was coincidence and that those were the actual plates of the car. They looked for a specific car and there was one they managed to buy out of a whoppin 3 or 4 that turned up, and those were the plates it had

Yeah, they're not checking if there's timebombs, they're checking how many timebombs they can stuff into it :v:

Actually, there were two Porsche 928s for sale when they were looking, and the one they bought was in better shape than the other. It also happened to have been issued with unfortunate-for-Top-Gear-in-Argentina plates that are completely meaningless unless you want to read meaning into it.
I mean, okay, 982, but the fuck is the H doing? It's being ignored because it's inconsistent with the message they want to see.
This is how conspiracy theories work, people.
