Mission control at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, broadcast live coverage of the event on NASA Television's Media Channel. The agency's EPOXI spacecraft is expected to acquire data with two imagers and an infrared instrument of a comet named Hartley 2 as it traveled at speeds of more than 27,000 mph (43,450 kph). Scientists are still working to determine if there was any damage to the spacecraft as the comet passed by. They hope to learn more about comets from images detailing the close approach. "Those early images may not be the 'money shot,' but we on the science team will prize them just as well, as they will help us further understand the nature of comets," EPOXI principal investigator Mike A'Hearn, of the University of Maryland, College Park, said in a NASA statement. The images are expected to depict the comet nucleus as little more than a point of light with a fuzzy coma, a gaseous cloud, surrounding it. Five years after NASA launched an 800-pound projectile into a comet in an effort to study its contents, the same spacecraft that launched the missile tracked Hartley 2 on Thursday. It is the first spacecraft to have visited two comets.
Sweet. Let the puns roll.
Sweet. Let the puns roll.
No.
27,000MPH, thats pretty fast. But I bet the Bugatti Veyron is quicker.
435 miles is not what i would call "close" but then again.. it is in a infintely big void of nothing-ness.. so maybe it is quite close
Skipping the puns, it's incredible that they did this. 435 miles is nothing in space and at those speeds. Also, a better picture:
435 miles is not what i would call "close" but then again.. it is in a infintely big void of nothing-ness.. so maybe it is quite close
its all relative. within 435 miles is a lot closer than youve ever gotten to a comet, isnt it?
Space turd?
A floater.
The light from the gas being expelled makes it look like it's about to go nuclear :v:
That just looks awesome. I'm surprised no one's rating this artistic.
That just looks awesome. I'm surprised no one's rating this artistic.
It's because the news article has nothing to do with minecraft.
It's the fastest comet... in the world.

I could have sworn the title said Starcraft when i first saw it. Anyway, that's a fast comet.

This thread is great.
27,000MPH, thats pretty fast. But I bet the Bugatti Veyron is quicker.
It is. It can easily go up to a million miles per hour. A million!
It is. It can easily go up to a million miles per hour. A million!
Just perfect.
No.
Yes, admin of facepunch, I'll do as your command.
<Pun here> It´s really cool that they was able to do that. I bet the planning and course department was sweating a bit when they passed it
