So today, December first, marks the first day of Chanukah(Also known as Hanukkah)
Chanukah is the Jewish version of Christmas basically, except it's spread out over 8 days.
The story goes that in the days of old (1000+ BCE) Moses was inside a temple and they only had a little bit of oil (only enough for a day) and needed to make that oil last for 8 days. A miracle happened, and the flame that was lit kept burning for 8 straight days.
Rate agree if you are Jewish and celebrate Chanukah.

חנוכה
That's the correct way; Hanukkah is just as good as Chanukah, both are romanizations.
Bullshit, it was an electric powered candle.
Electricity didn't exist back then
:science:
All of my Jewish friends keep talking about their delicious Jewish cuisine and it makes me want some. Who wants to deliver some Latkes to me?

Electricity has always existed.
How is Hanukkah at all like chistmas? Same time of year sure, that's about it.
For some reason my mom is celebrating Chanukah.
I just want to celebrate christmas like a normal person. :frown:
But that is kinda lame, celebrating oil lasting longer than it should, chirstmas is the birth of the gods son and easter is his respawn, so christainity wins with holidays, though jews have more and are more related with their original meanings.

You're trying to apply logic to religion.

Christians ripped off a lot of Pagan holidays including Christmas in order to make it more appealing to people.

well for a few nanoseconds after the big bang electromagnetism didn't exist

Chinhook.
Chanukah.
Not seeing it.
how much of presents consist of jews giving each other money?
The oil-burning for eight days is the storybook version told to kids. Hanukkah really celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple after the Jews, led by Juda the Maccabee, defeated the Greeks and retook Jerusalem in the 2nd century. Hanukkah means "rededication". So Hanukkah really celebrates us defeating the Greeks and regaining our freedom. I don't know where you got the whole Moses thing from.
Hanukkah also competed for converts, like Christmas. The idea is that it would be easier to get people to switch over when the holidays were pretty much the same, rather than making new ones. The corresponding Holiday for the Romans was the Saturnalia.
