It's time
What the heck, this isn’t ferdinand.
"no one was a mary sue in this movie"
um bb-8?
"no one was a mary sue in this movie"

BB-8 is less of a character and more of a spherical deus ex machina at this point.
I think Rich nailed it right out of the gate when he called it "not a mess, but messy."
Although I do feel that I like it more than they did.
imagine if bb8 was as capable in TFA as he was in this movie
none of tfa would have happened because bb8 would have done a backflip out of the net and shocked the guy and taken his wallet, sped off to nima outpost and stole the falcon, blowing up 3 first order freighters on the way out, then he flies all the way to luke, knocks him out and ties him up and drags him back to the resistance
much better movie imo
can't wait for the plinkett review
is rich's laugh pitched down at 11:30? that caught me off guard :v:
BB8 contributed to almost 80% of things I hated about this movie every time he was on screen I would rather have been watching phantom menace.

yeah, and so is mike's laugh at 25:24

So R2D2 except more spherical.

The difference is that (original trilogy) R2D2 shows restraint. He carries a message, he opens doors, he hangs out with Luke on his X-Wing so that Luke has somebody to talk to, he smuggles in Luke's lightsabre and some other general robot buddy stuff. In the grand scheme of things, he doesn't do that much. You can call him a plot device, but you can call anything remotely useful to the protagonists a plot device.
You compare that to the shit that BB-8 pulls every five minutes.
It's like someone shot John Lennon, George Harrison and Paul McCartney
Never change Mike

You're forgetting that he fixes the Falcon's hyperdrive in order to escape Cloud City, and stops the trash compactor from crushing the main cast just in time. and that's just in the OT.
Even Mark Hamill says R2D2 has saved more lives than anybody else in the SW universe.
38:15 and onward - funny how this thought is reflected in movie by Luke [sp] when he talks about legends and reality not alightning with expectations and how such perception clouds judgement [/sp]
Yeah their opinions lines up with mine. Just bunch of good stuff mixed with a bunch of weird and questionable stuff.
I really disagree with them about [sp]Yoda[/sp] although Mike's dementia w/r/t [sp]confusing Yoda with a butt-shakin' garden gnome[/sp] was hilarious.

Maybe when they put Mr Plinkett in a home, they can soon after put Mike in that same home :v:
Surprisingly echo'd most of how I felt, which is strange because I usually disagree with them when it comes to Star Wars. It's strange because like they said there's plenty to like about this movie, it's just so god damned all over the place.

[sp]i think mike had a good point about yoda, and it was something i hadn't actually thought about. yoda is always serious after he drops the ruse, often gravely serious. he's constantly concerned about luke, has to be convinced by obi-wan to even train him, and advises him against being reckless and going off to fight vader before finishing his training. now for some reason he's acting like a wacky goblin again and trolling luke for pretty much no reason and saying "lol it doesn't matter shit's gonna be fine dude, those books don't matter haha (actually they do since rey took them but i'm not going to tell you that because i'm fucking with you for some reason), rey is basically perfect and there's no reason to be worried about her at all, hey check out this sick force shit i can do" the only reason i can think of why they did this is that they wanted to evoke the ESB conceptualization of yoda rather than prequel yoda, and one of the things that stands out about him in ESB is how he acts at first. but it doesn't really make sense.[/sp]
I like how people rating winner to this video rated all the people in the home thread making the same points a mountain of boxes.

[sp]See I felt that it was closer to 'friendly, warm joshing' than 'acting like a weirdo'. Calling him 'young Skywalker' was funny, but he still keeps it to the more serious characterization as he drops wisdom on Luke about the importance of letting the new generation take the reins. Even at his silliest he's not full-on the cackling muppet that he acts like in ESB. Plus seeing how Luke starts out "I'm going to burn down this damn tree" but panics and rushes to save the books once it actually starts burning, Yoda is calling his bluff and messing with him. Sort of telling Luke 'despite your age and self-seriousness you don't know everything - just look at me.'
I got the impression that being a ghost for 30 years made Yoda chill out a bit, unlike last time with the severity of Vader and the Empire hanging over him and Luke he was able to be less severe.[/sp]

This.
He [sp]just showed up to call Luke on his edgelord "I don't even give a fuck about the Jedi anymore, I'm being super serious right now" bullshit.[/sp]
Compare this to Kylo Ren, [sp]a character who has a very similar mindset, but no Yoda to even him out. The closest thing he has to a mentor or voice of reason is Snoke, and that isn't exactly a functional relationship. So Yoda shows up to take Luke down a peg and set him on the right path; when they first met, he was taking shit too seriously ("I'M WASTING MY TIME, I'M HERE TO FIND A GREAT WARRIOR TO TEACH ME HOW TO KICK ASS LIKE A COOL GUY"), it's the same deal here ("THE JEDI ARE FLAWED, I'M GONNA BURN IT ALL DOWN, I DON'T EVEN CARE A LITTLE"), and both times Yoda fucks with him a little to bring him back down to earth.[/sp]
I also really like how [sp]they imply Luke is gonna take on a similar role for Kylo Ren, showing up as a ghost to make fun of his self-serious bullshit, inspiring him to reassess his priorities as a result.[/sp]

[sp]That's the sort of behavior I've liked to imagine Anakin's ghost doing to Kylo off-scream, though it's more of a comedic side-thought than a serious drama thing that should be done. Like this: https://images-cdn.9gag.com/photo/axjDj7Y_700b.jpg
On that note, I felt it's a shame they didn't have a Ghost Anakin scene in the film, but I suppose it wasn't felt as being right for their themes or whatever. Or they were afraid of bringing up the controversey my avatar came from again.[/sp]
I feel like enough time has passed that we can accept Hayden Christiansen showing up as a spooky specter again.
Of course, to look at it from a soulless corporate perspective, it would be a wise decision on Disney's part to start bolstering elements from the prequel canon (which they sorta did with Ewan McGregor recording that "these are your first steps" line for TFA and Luke [sp]mentioning Darth Sidious[/sp] in TLJ). The prequels are a black spot on an otherwise universally well-liked brand, so it'd be a smart financial decision to try and heal them retroactively.
Similarly, we're getting that standalone Obi-Wan film, so expect Ghost Ben sometime in the future (the same way the [sp]dice[/sp] are gonna show up in the Han Solo movie).
:v:
I strongly believe Rian Johnson hates JJ Abrams with a passion. When he heard that he wasn't going to be directing episode 9 he made that superman leia scene just to fuck with JJ. Enjoy writing episode 9.
i like how all the facepunchers who want to elaborate in the problems of the film are here in this thread and the ones who loved it are defending it at the angry joes video thread.
I loved it. There were a few moments I didn't like - they didn't spoil the film for me. I'm here because I enjoy Half in the Bag -- that doesn't mean I always agree with their opinions in their reviews.
Your move, autodesknoob.
