What Is F1
shamelessly stealing from wikipedia posted:
Formula One, also known as Formula 1 or F1 and referred to officially as the FIA Formula One World Championship, is the highest class of single-seater auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The "formula", designated in the name, refers to a set of rules with which all participants' cars must comply. The F1 season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix (from French, originally meaning great prizes), held throughout the world on purpose-built circuits and public roads. The results of each race are evaluated using a points system to determine two annual World Championships, one for the drivers and one for the constructors. The racing drivers, constructor teams, track officials, organisers, and circuits are required to be holders of valid Super Licences, the highest class of racing licence issued by the FIA.
F1 cars are the fastest multi-turn circuit-racing cars in the world, owing to very high cornering speeds achieved through the generation of large amounts of aerodynamic downforce. Formula One cars race at speeds of up to 350 km/h (220 mph) with engines limited in performance to a maximum of 15,000 revolutions per minute (RPM). The cars are capable of lateral acceleration in excess of five g in corners. The performance of the cars is very dependent on electronics – although traction control and other driving aids have been banned since 2008 – and on aerodynamics, suspension and tyres. The formula has radically evolved and changed through the history of the sport.
While Europe is the sport's traditional base, and hosts about half of each year's races, the sport's scope has expanded significantly during recent years and an increasing number of Grands Prix are held on other continents. F1 had a total global television audience of 527 million people during the course of the 2010 season.
F1 is fast cars going fast
Basic Rules
New rules are italicized
1. All cars can be no more than 180cm wide and 95cm tall.
2. All cars must have a 1.6 litre V6 Turbo engine limited to 15,000 RPM containing 100kg of fuel, and must use 100kg of fuel/hour (2013 had a 2.4 litre V8 with 18,000 RPM)
3. Cars also have ERS (Energy Recovery System), which gives the car a longer boost. KERS (or ERS-K) is now built into the engine
4. Cars can not refuel during the course of the race
5. In dry conditions, cars must change tyre compounds once, choosing both Prime (longer "stint," or time on track) and Option (softer, more grip, and faster laps, but less durability)
6. After qualifying, the cars cannot be worked on by the teams
7. Breaking general good sportsmanship rules (ie, crashing into people, cutting corners, etc) will lead to a penalty, varying from having to drive through pit lane while obeying the 50 mph speed limit without stopping, adding positions to a driver's finish/qualifying position, or a time penalty
8. The first ten finishers of a race are awarded varying points which go to the Driver's and Constructor's Championships.
NEW RULES
[ Source: http://www.formula1.com ]
Power units - each driver is restricted to four power units during the season, although that will be increased to five (as in 2014) if the number of races as originally scheduled exceeds 20. Should a driver exceed the total, a grid penalty (see below) will be imposed.
Power unit penalties - the replacement of a complete power unit no longer results in an automatic penalty; instead penalties are applied cumulatively based on the individual components of each power unit. Unlike in 2014, grid penalties no longer roll over to the next event. If a driver is unable to take their full grid penalty, the remainder will be applied as a time penalty for the relevant Grand Prix, on the following basis:
1-5 grid places: five-second time penalty
6-10 grid places: drive-through penalty
11-20 grid places: ten-second stop-and-go penalty
More than 20 grid places: a time penalty
New penalties - in addition to the five-second penalty introduced for 2014, race stewards also have the option to hand out ten-second penalties for minor infringements in 2015.
Points - double points will no longer be applied for the season finale in 2015.
Standings restarts - a proposal for standing restarts has been rescinded, meaning safety-car restarts will follow the same procedure as in previous years.
Virtual Safety Car - in a bid to improve safety, particularly in the event of double waved yellow flags, a virtual safety car system designed to ensure drivers slow sufficiently has been introduced for 2015. This can be used to neutralise a race without having to introduce the safety car itself.
Race suspensions - for 2015, drivers must proceed slowly into the pit lane, rather than back onto the starting grid, in the event of a race suspension.
Clearing the grid - a driver will be forced to start from the pit lane if any member of his team, or any relevant equipment, remains on the starting grid after the 15-second signal has been shown.
Unsafe releases - for 2015, unsafe releases will be met with an automatic ten-second stop-and-go penalty for the relevant driver. Additional penalties may be imposed at the stewards’ discretion.
Safety car lapped drivers - as was the case in 2014, lapped cars may unlap themselves behind the safety car; however, the safety car will no longer need to wait until said drivers have caught back up to the back of the field before leaving the track. Instead, the safety car is free to pull back into the pits on the following lap after the last lapped car has been waved through.
Suspension - any suspension systems fitted to either the front or rear wheels may only react to direct changes of load applied to the relevant section. Front-and-Rear Interconnected Suspension (FRIC) will therefore be formally outlawed.
Gearbox - teams will no longer be able to re-nominate gearings during the season - they could do it once in 2014.
Minimum weight - the minimum weight has been increased slightly for 2015 - without fuel, each car must weigh at least 702kg.
Nose designs - new regulations, brought in to improve safety and also restrict strange and ugly solutions, mean nose designs become more uniform. 2014 layouts like the anteater and twin tusk will no longer be legal.
Cockpit safety - the Zylon anti-intrusion panels on both sides of the survival cell have been extended upwards to the rim of the cockpit and alongside the driver’s head.
In-season testing - there will be two in-season two-day tests, down from four in 2014. Two of the four days in total must be reserved for young drivers.

DISCUSSION
1. Will Ferrari meet up to it's name for the 2015 season?
2. Can the new McLaren + Honda partnership bring back the old days?
3. Other questions...
shame that Alonso won't be able to race in Australia
Maybe the FIA will make a regulation against wind mid-season
calling it here mercedes wins the manufacturer's and driver's championship
[editline]7th March 2015[/editline]
but I'm hoping for JB to at least get one more win with the vtec powered mclaren
With what has happened over the season I see Ferrari making a comeback. MB might actually make something happen again but Ferrari is back to it's roots with a principle that isn't a d-bag
Is anyone going to watch Melbourne?
Is anyone going to watch Melbourne?
Not live due to timezones, but I am definitely gonna watch the race.
Let´s just hope that this won´t be Mercedeswinslol: Electric Boogaloo: The Season.
I wonder if the Manors will be able to beat another backmarker this year.
Also, Giedo van der Garde is taking Sauber to the courtroom for having breached his contract for a 2015 seat at Sauber. It seems that van der Garde already had secured his seat with his sponsorship, but then Sauber decided to bring in Nasr and Ericsson with their sponsors, and they practically have hired three drivers (or actually four because Sutil isn't officially sacked yet with still having a year contract with them too) with only two cars to drive.
Either way, I can't see this ending too well for Sauber given their recent form.

Sauber ever since it was Spyker, was always one of those "one-off" F1 teams that is started by a billionaire with no passion for the sport but money. I don't really see it going much farther, aswell as Manor, or Marussia
