A new ban on cheap alcohol is already failing because high-strength booze is still being sold for less than a bottle of water, experts said today.

Oh wow, I wish it was cheap like that here.
Doing a ban on cheap alcohol isn't going to do much.
Only thing that can really be done is education on Alcohol abuse and over consumption.
Learn how to ruin your liver with this one miracle drink! doctors hate it!
Man I'm so thirsty, a few of those would go down well right now. I'm off to the shop to buy some cider.
I find it quite ridiculous that this is cheaper than a bottle of water, wish I understood economics
I bet the chavs are loving this news.
7.5% is considered high strength? Huh.
why ban cheap alcohol? as a consumer of cheap alcohol this is offensive.

Quite high for cider

Pretty high for a cider. It's not hard alcohol after all, most of its around 4.5% or something.

Well I'm used to drinking 80 proof vodka most the time so id probably think it's pretty low because of that
I didn't mean to sound suspect but what I was saying, I drink vodka that's around 80 proof sometimes. I don't like ciders or beer. Maybe malts or something though. I don't drink it as it were beer. Maybe a fifth every now and again but that's very rare.
I'm just used to people calling things high alcohol when it's liqour. I honestly never heard of ciders before today, even though I've tried some.

You just drink straight vodka at the same rate as somebody would drink beer/cider?

You can't really compare the alcoholic content of the two. Pretty different drinks :v: But yeah, things like ciders, lagers, etc. are all normally sub-6%.

doesn't even have a liver
Woah woah woah, Blackpool? Here? What the fuck? I was wondering where these came from

Over the counter Cider (Magners, Bulmers, Strongbow) around 4.5-5%
Hard Cider (Scrumpy Jack, Keplers, Druids) 6-7%
Craft Cider (Hertfordshire, Somerset, Armagh) 6.5-10%
Thats the loose gist of Irish/British Ciders.

White cider (in the picture) is around 7-10%, and is normally the cheapest (and worst tasting) of them all

It would be in the hard cider group. Generally those brands are popular with chavs and tramps

why are you comparing booze to a beer or cider??

Because he wants to show his drinking prowess but has come off as a bit suspect with that line haha.
I'm sure if you did the maths, 'expensive' alcohol like Jack Daniels, Grey Goose, the rest of it, would wind up to be as cheap as this because it's in larger quantities and much higher strength (alc. vol%)
I can already hear the sound of backyard distilleries making cheap low-percent alcohol to avoid taxes, and maximize profit.
Oh wow, I wish it was cheap like that here.
If you tried tasting it you'd change your mind.

Nah I just worked it out, Jack Daniels is 85p per UK unit (Tesco: £34 1litre), Omega is 23p per UK unit
Damn, I haven't found anything that strong here in the States. I love cider.
Also, something's fucked up when water costs more than an alcoholic beverage.

There isn't really a market for backyard booze in the UK or Ireland. I mean we have Poitín here but that's like moonshine. If your thinking of small cottage industry breweries that have a license to make and sell booze than they generally go for the higher quality/higher cost margin than the cheap piss that passes for drink on a supermarket shelf.

You wouldn't want to try white cider anyway, other strong ciders are just as nice, such as Old Rosie:
