I recently started learning to make dubstep tracks, and I was taught in Abelton live. Does anyone know of any equally good free alternatives, I currently do not have the money to get Abelton.
audiotool is pretty good

reaper is also good (not completely free, but relatively cheap)

not sure if they're similar to ableton. they're great DAWs though
also, ardour (not for windows though so i don't think you'll find it all that useful)

i would recommend reaper, but the only fully free windows DAW that i have listed is audiotool
Free DAW's are terrible, either buy it or find another way to get it.

You take that back right now! :(
*whisper* I love my Reaper...

That's the thing though. The only decent free DAW I've ever tried is Reaper.
reaper only has a free trial, and for a full commercial license it costs $225. i mean, its relatively cheap compared to other DAWs
i still think audiotool is good though
I am yet to see a producer that uses a free DAW that makes chart toppers

I'd like to see 0.1% of people who use commercial DAWs make chart toppers.
There are probably underground people who make some money with free DAWs, not impossible at all. I've heard a couple guys released some EP on a proper label which was made 100% in audiotool or some shit.
It really is mostly about the user. The reason nobody uses free DAWs when we are talking about someone who makes money by making music is that they CAN afford something better. Some people can't. Most people probably wouldn't dish out 200-500 bucks on a hobby they probably won't be making money by.
OP, my recommendation is Audiotool, because it is actually quite good, and somewhat close to a fullfledged DAW. The really good(and bad) thing is, it's made in flash, and it's browserbased. It takes a little getting sued to the interface, but I've heard some damn decent stuff made on it.
I use both Reaper and Logic Pro
Problem?
Reaper is good and free, but does not do a lot of what Live does.

You only need the commercial license, however, if you have a gross revenue exceeding $20k. For the majority here that isn't the case.
So the for most people here the cost for REAPER is actually the discounted license of $60, which, for the a DAW of this feature set, is unheard of.

Cough cough* arrr pirates.. Cough cough*. Just either buy Ableton or get it by other means.. Can't go wrong with it. It is very flexible. Has support for many things including max/msp or max for live, which for a monome user, is essential. It hooks up off the bat to a long list of other controllers as well..
