While we're in the midst of the current tornadoes that are destroying everything in the Midwest, I came across this searching for videos. I can't imagine being in the middle of that storm as it's passing over me.
This is the raw, unedited video shot by KSNW 3 photojournalist Ted Louis, who was accompanied by reporter Greg Jarrett on 26-April-1991, the day of a widespread, significant tornado outbreak throughout the central Plains states.
The video, shot on the Kansas turnpike north of El Dorado, Kansas, quickly gained international attention in the days following it's broadcast on national American network/local affiliate newscasts. Edited versions of the intense sequence became so overplayed in the years after it's release, that it popularized a common reaction made by motorists in severe weather situations. People began seeking shelter under highway overpasses as a "safe" option during tornado and severe thunderstorm events, with evidence of such actions well documented in the mid-late 1990's. Quite contrary to what this video unintentionally led the mass public to believe, seeking shelter underneath highway overpasses is NOT a safe option during tornadoes, and should be avoided.
It is recommended you do not take shelter under an overpass as it the wind speed only increases underneath the underpass.
Oh wow I just noticed the little excerpt you posted.
I'd never take shelter under an overpass in any sense, but they really had no choice, I suppose.
It's also recommended in tornado chasing to chase the tornado, not to be chased.
Might as well post this
