I have a crapload of time left, and with the upcoming release of Toy Story 3, I decided to start a Pixar Marathon. I will try to watch all Pixar movies and shorts and try to post a review for them after I watch them. I'll start with Cars, moving to Finding Nemo, coming back for Toy Story 1 and 2. Then Ratatouille, Monsters Inc and A Bug's Life. I'll end the marathon with The Incredibles and Wall-E. In the reviews I'll also add technical details and interesting facts about the movie and how it lives today (touching on matters such as the Disney Parks).
FIRST REVIEW (Monday, April 4th):
- Cars

I haven't watched Cars in a while, but I do know that this is Pixar's film "made for children" (It means that the children loved the movie more than adults) and with the worst critic. But I also read in a newspaper that this is one of Pixar's "made for adults" movie, touching on more adult's themes. Anyway, you decide. The story is about a world where there are no humans, only cars (Mater says: "Ladies and gentlecars"), and where the cars perform activities that we do everyday. It tells the story of Lightning McQueen, a racing rookie, (named after Glen McQueen, Pixar animator who died of cancer before the film went into production, and voiced by Owen Wilson) who dream is to win the Piston Cup- however, he is very selfish and only cares for himself, leaving him with no friends (and later with no "pit stop team"). Smart move by Pixar: "The King", a car famous for being the face of Dinoco's (the most famous sponsor), who is competing for the Piston Cup, together with McQueen and Chick (the second place guy, who could do anything to win). Anyway, The King gives the moral of the film to McQueen- however we DON'T listen to it. Instead we see a dream scene of McQueen winning the cup and becoming famous. As The King, McQueen and Chick cross the line at the same time, they have to go to California in order to continue the cup and see who will win- and this is where the movie gets really interesting: Mac, McQueen's transport truck, is ordered to stay up all night so McQueen gets to California first. However, since Mac is sleeping on the road, a couple of tuned cars begin to make fun of him, in which his backdoor is open and McQueen falls out. Lost and looking for his transport truck, he ends up in the little town of Radiator Springs, where he pratically destroys the main street and is ordered to fix it, so he can go to California. While he fixes the road, he begins to learn the true meaning of friendship and family.
Now, lets leave the history aside- the animation of this movie is fantastic. Look at the last scene, where McQueen and Chick are on California, racing. You can see that the reflection of Chick's "thunder" keeps appearing and disappearing on McQueen as he drives near and far from Chick. The effects on this movie are really great too. By far, this and Finding Nemo are my favorite Pixar movies, when talking about animation.
Moving to the history. I have to admit that the Pixar movies with adult themes (Finding Nemo, Up, Wall-E, Ratatouille, according to my opnion) are the best. Not only can Pixar make a great history that makes you forget about the bathroom while watching the movie. And you just love those characters- however, there is something about Cars that just... annoys me: I can't feel for McQueen. The only character that really got me interested was Doc and Mater. Mater being the nice and clumsy fella- you can almost consider him a car version of Goofy- and Doc, a car that tries to drive away from his past (noticed what I did there?). McQueen wasn't just the right character for me.
The music: the score for this movie was composed by genius Randy Newman. When you hear the words Randy Newman and Pixar, you know you're in for a treat. Toy Story 1 and 2, Bug's Life and Monsters Inc were really incredible, but the opening music (Real Gone) was the perfect song. Starting the movie with a rock song just showed how fast it was, and it really mixed well with the first race sequence. And it predicts whats going to happen with McQueen soon. The song "Our Town" was a great tune (not perfect) to the Radiator Spring's past sequence.
Overall, Cars is a great film to watch with your kids. Grab some popcorn and you're in for a real treat. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the Pixar references (YOU'RE A TOY-CAR!) and the special participation of Mario Andretii. Cars gets a 8/10. What makes me wonder is: why isn't Cars on the Parks a lot? McQueen opens the Pixar Play Parade and he was featured as a Living Character in the D23 Expo, with mouth projections, to look like he is really talking to the guests, and there will be a Cars Land soon on Disney's California Adventure. Really excited for these additions.

That was the surprise.
Finding Nemo (APRIL 5TH)
I have to start this review saying one thing: I could just ignore the entire movie and just have the Dory sequences- she is a fantastic character, not only in her animation but on her voice acting. And thats where I give the kudos to Ellen DeGeneres. I just loved her voice on Dory- "I shall call you squishy and you shall be mine and you shall be my squishy." If Dory wasn't there, I think the movie would lost one of its major characters.
Anyway, Finding Nemo is the Pixar film that still amazes me with its animation (keep in mind, this movie was released in 2003, and we see the kind of animation that got repeated in Up.) The underwater world is fantastic, and everything is in movement- and the beauty of Finding Nemo not only lies on the characters and their incredible personalities, but also on the nature, that plays probably the most important role in Finding Nemo.
So the story of Finding Nemo is the one that has the darkest theme: Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks), a clownfish, has just moved to a new house with his wife, Coral, another clownfish. They have thousands of little fishes, their sons, hidden behind their underwater house. However, a barracuda attacks, and eats Coral and all their sons, except one. Marlin wakes up, scared, and finds only one little fish (he isn't born yet), and promises to take maximum care of him, calling him Nemo. Here's an interesting fact: when the female clownfish dies, the male clownfish is supposed to CHANGE SEX. :crossarms: Anyway, time passes and we see a young Nemo, eager to go to school, and a super-protective Marlin, afraid of everything around them. As Marlin takes Nemo to school, he discovers that Mr.Ray, the teacher, is taking them to the drop-off. Afraid that Nemo might swim off, Marlin follows them. Nemo and his school buddies find a boat docked near them, and they challenge Nemo to swim near it. Marlin appears, saying that Nemo "thinks that he can do these things but you are wrong!" Nemo gets really pissed and swims away. The swimmers appear and catch Nemo, and blind Marlin with a flash. When the boat drives away, Marlin is crazy, trying to find his son. After that, he finds Dory, a short-term memory fish who becomes his loyal friend, Bruce, leader of a group of sharks who thinks that "fish are friends not food", and Crush (voiced by Andrew Staton), a turtle that teaches him to "go with the flow". Meanwhile, Nemo ends up in an aquarium, where he finds a group of fishes, leaded by Gil (Willem Dafoe), whose aim is to escape the aquarium, but their plans always fail, and with Nemo coming to the aquarium, he sees a chance of escaping. And how are these worlds connected? By Nigel, the pelican.
Finding Nemo is probably the film that most expanded from its own movie: it has a theme park attraction- The Seas with Nemo and Friends (in the same park, Epcot, where Ellen DeGeneres has an attraction where she is the host), a musical version of the film playing at Animal Kingdom, video games, and created probably the best stupid characters the world has ever seen: the seagulls. It has a lot of references to water movies such as Jaws (Bruce is a reference to it, actually).
Finding Nemo is probably, to me, the best movie Pixar has ever made. It gets a 10/10. Congratulations.
