Yes, the deal is real. Mojang is being bought by Microsoft. It was reassuring to see how many of your opinions mirrored those of the Mojangstas when we heard the news. Change is scary, and this is a big change for all of us. It’s going to be good though. Everything is going to be OK. <3
Microsoft acquired Mojang for a smooth 2.5 BILLION dollars.
That's a lot of vacation money.
At least proper development of Minecraft died a long time ago.

I guess it was actually 2.5 billion all along.
I think it's a little messed up that "it's too early to confirm which of us will continue working on Minecraft or other projects". A buyout for this amount of money, and there are no employment guarantees?
I still wonder if this will affect any of the Minecraft modding stuff.

Even Notch seems to not enjoy it even a bit, but whatevs.

So, um, whats gonna happen to the PS3 version of Minecraft? Is it going to be quickly discontinued or something? I mean it just released.
Does anyone else remember when we were religiously following development of this game way back in its infancy?
Now it sold for 2.5 billion.
Welp.

My hard guess is that MS is going to retire that from stores.
Hopefully Notch will start making games again, but anonymously or under an alias

I don't think they'll just stop with it right away, but I wonder if a PS4 version will ever be released now (they did announce one already if I'm not mistaken)
So, um, whats gonna happen to the PS3 version of Minecraft? Is it going to be quickly discontinued or something? I mean it just released.
Microsoft explicitly state in their xbox.com post that the Playstation, iOS and Android versions aren't going away.

Funny thing is, if it's Notch, it's going to have the risk of getting as popular as Minecraft and make Notch take a shot to himself in the forehead.

Microsoft makes software for Mac, so I don't think they'll kill the game for other platforms.
Now Microsoft is going to make it only available on Xbone for next gen consoles.
Minecraft only succeeded because of a lack of coherent competition. It still amazes me that nobody was able to jump on that and actually make a semi-decent product to challenge it.
Let me clarify this before an argument starts. Plenty of games tried to ape Minecraft to cash in on the success, but I can't think of any off the top of my head that had any soul beyond just being cash grabs.
yeah I'd sell my soul for that money
Microsoft explicitly state in their xbox.com post that the Playstation, iOS and Android versions aren't going away.

At Microsoft, we believe in the power of content to unite people. Minecraft adds diversity to our game portfolio and helps us reach new gamers across multiple platforms. Gaming is the top activity across devices and we see great potential to continue to grow the Minecraft community and nurture the franchise. That is why we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms – including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC.
The fact that they've came out and said that straight away is pretty awesome. It's nice of them to do when being dicks about it could possible have made more money.

There's the opportunities with it tho'.
Windows 9 released with minecraft pre-installed, "rent yourself a certified server from our cloud!"
Minecraft 2 the sequel, "explore deeper, great quests lay before you!"
And the eventual good PR when Microsoft and Facebook will be cooperating on bringing Oculus to Minecraft. "omg microsoft saved minecraft huzzah"
Notch barely even work with Mojang anymore so I can't say I blame him for taking 2.5B
Why the hell, anyways, does this remind me of Phil Fish and other suicidal indie game devs? It's mostly like the most popular and common indies that are in the industry are like melancholic psychopathic hipsters.

Yes, just like how 4J, currently a Microsoft studios group didn't make the playstation versions.
[sp]That's a lie[/sp]

A few people tried, but there's so much content in Minecraft now (despite people's complaints) that it nearly becomes like a World of Warcraft style situation, where there's just so much content the differentiated gameplay is not enough to make up for a lack of it.
Quite interesting I wonder what they end up doing with it.
Maybe Microsoft can afford more than having two guys churn out updates once every year that just has a bunch of mods from 2010 with an "official" sticker slapped onto them.
So according to this article Notch has a 71% stake in Mojang. The article quotes the sale at 2 billion (it's from the 10th of September) so considering it's 2.5, that means notch gets 1.775 billion. Before tax.
Waiting for a change.org petition to come up and do FA :v:

The PS4 version came out two weeks ago, two days before the Xbone version.
Waiting for a change.org petition to come up and do FA :v:
At least one prominent modder has already quit in a rage before seeing if anything happens.
The amount of tinfoil hattery that's going to come out of this before Microsoft so much as even coughs in the general direction of Sweden is going to be pretty funny.
