BANGOR, Maine – Author Stephen King and his wife are donating money so 150 soldiers from the Maine Army National Guard can come home for the holidays.
King and his wife, Tabitha, who live in Bangor, are paying $13,000 toward the cost of two bus trips so that members of the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Unit can travel from Camp Atterbury in Indiana to Maine for Christmas. The soldiers left Maine last week for training at Camp Atterbury. They are scheduled to depart for Afghanistan in January.
Julie Eugley, one of King's personal assistants, told the Bangor Daily News that the Kings were approached about giving $13,000.
But Stephen King thought the number 13 was a bit unlucky, so the couple pitched in $12,999 instead. Eugley chipped in $1 to make for an even $13,000.
Good guy
This just in two buses carrying recently relieved soldiers from Indiana was bombed on route to a secret location in Maine
Not funny no, but I can still see it happening.

Get out.
Cool on him.
That's pretty awesome. The whole $13,000 unlucky part I can see as something King would do.

Yeah I thought the same thing. After reading a few of his books it does sound like something he would do.

I can only expect that from my second most favoured book author of mine. Mostly because the first most favoured author of mine is dead.
Great guy.
King just moved up a dozen pegs on my "awesome" list.
watch something go terribly wrong as some sort of marketing plot for a new book
that's great!
take that Stephenie Meyer! she would probably just send them copies of Twilight.
I was expecting a bunch of troops deployed in iraq to be flown home by private jet, but it's just them getting a bus across the country.
Wouldn't using a regular bus cost less?
Well that's nice of him.

That's not as useless as you'd think, they've gotta have something to burn when they get to Afghanistan. Deserts can get pretty fucking cold.
If we could only get the rest of the country to support the troops.
As awesome as that is, 150 soldiers isn't really that many.
Still pretty cool of him though.

Cherry picked ones from their area perhaps?
That's nice :)
That's very nice of him. More rich people should do this.
That's great. It's nice to see people doing stuff like this.
Didn't know King was so generous. Love the book "Cell" as well.
Good man. Props to him. :D
King is from Maine if it didn't mention it in the article. He has a love affair with that state which is apparent in his books.

In the broad spectrum of things, no, but you have to consider that is a whole company of troops.
150 soldiers is a sizable fighting force, even if it's only a small portion of the military force we have deployed/ready to deploy.
I love Stephen King. Such an awesome writer.
It would be cooler if he payed $19,000.
I'm pretty close to where he lives. His house looks pretty sweet, and he has a giant frog on his yard.
