Arresting Officer Mobley: I should have just let [the arrestee] get off the train and go. Assistant District Attorney Barta: Ah, you should have said that he pulled a knife on you and shot the son of a bitch. Mobley: (Laughter) Barta: (Laughter) He pulled something out of his pocket and it looked like a gun... then... it was a goddamn comb, I'm sorry! (Laughter) Mobley: My bad, I'm sorry! (Laughter) Barta: My bad! (Laughter) Barta: (Laughter) Oh well, anyway… (Pause) Or, you could have arrested him, alleged that the train tried to pull out, and here's a thought, throw him under the track, the wheels, and then say he tried to escape. But too late for that.... Mobley: Yeah ... Mobley: Oh well! Anyway...
AlterNet
bad apples, everybody.
Watch as they plead not guilty.

We've gotta give him the worst sentence we could give an officer. 3 months paid suspension.
We've gotta give him the worst sentence we could give an officer. 3 months paid suspension.
I remember reading more about this from somewhere. When on that paid suspension the officers are basically under house arrest, and it's apparently illegal to fire someone for being accused of a crime before the verdict is delivered. Innocent until proven guilty, etc.
I make jokes about doing bad things sometimes, and you all do too
boo didn't read
But have you made bad jokes over someone you killed?
Except if you read the article you would know that the guy they were talking about wasn't killed.
But have you made bad jokes over someone you killed?
Yeah the guy's not dead. Can we honestly say we're different when we have games like Fallout whose humor is dark?
Except if you read the article you would know that the guy they were talking about wasn't killed.
My bad, I did read it and it said he was murdered so I went off of that.
Yeah the guy's not dead. Can we honestly say we're different when we have games like Fallout whose humor is dark?
To be fair, those are just games. We understand it's fiction. Those things actually happening generally disturbs the most of us.
To be fair, those are just games. We understand it's fiction. They were just joking around about a person who they thought was a terrorist.
The scenarios they were talking about were also fiction, they didn't happen and weren't going too. Shit like this is unprofessional coming from anyone, but especially a fucking cop.
Pretty standard joking. There's a big difference about joking about doing something and being willing to do it.
Let them joke on their own time. Shit like this is unprofessional coming from anyone, but especially a fucking cop.
Yeah damn those cops, working one of the worst jobs imaginable and cracking jokes sometimes. Those damn pigs and their jokes. I don't give them MY tax dollars to sit around and joke some of the time.
Expecting professionalism from the people who enforce the law, how ridiculous
Expecting professionalism from the people who enforce the law, how ridiculous
They're human beings, not fucking robots. You can't expect them to go around and act like Robocop all day long. They're not running around drowning babies and throwing pregnant women through panes of glass, they were joking.
Expecting professionalism from the people who enforce the law, how ridiculous
The nerve of them to have dark humor about something
I remember reading more about this from somewhere.
You don't have to fire them. Just don't pay them.
Somehow can't see that working, you know, considering the whole house arrest thing? You can't expect someone to have 3 months of zero income that they can't do anything about due to being stuck at the beck and call of the investigators. Cops don't earn mad bank in the first place if I recall, so it's not like they're gonna have tons of money to cover bills and everyday life just sitting around.
They're human beings, not fucking robots. You can't expect them to go around and act like Robocop all day long. They're not running around drowning babies and throwing pregnant women through panes of glass, they were joking.
Of course, no reasonable person expects them to be completely emotionless machines or some shit like that. The big problem here is this cop and this ADA are on record having suggested murdering a suspect, whether or not they're serious that's still a huge problem. I have no problem with them cracking jokes but part of maintaining a professional attitude is knowing when to or to not say something. I'd expect law enforcers to know that pretty damn well.
Does anyone have an alternate article for this? This one is pretty poorly written and focuses more on racism than it does the actual case or recordings. I tried looking another up by looking up the guys name but all I got were biographies of the suspect and anarchy websites.
They're not running around drowning babies and throwing pregnant women through panes of glass, they were joking.
You're right. They joked about how they should have shot or thrown a young man under a train; but gosh durn it was too late. That is also reprehensible. They shouldn't have to start drowning babies before you realize theres something wrong. Also, I can definitively say that I've never in my life joked about how I should have killed a guy. Its really not as normal as you're making it out to be.
Also, I can definitively say that I've never in my life joked about how I should have killed a guy. Funny how much the sentiment changes when it's a police officer making the joke.
On one hand, that's not really something people in those positions should joke about, but on the other hand, I can definitely understand how frustrating it must be to let a guy a go if you think he's guilty. Especially one that's shot at police.

It wasn't a "young man" that they were joking about, it was a old dood who just got out of a 25 year stretch in prison for a bank robbery and shoot out. He had heavy ties to a nationalist movement that was guilty of carrying out several bombings and murders. The dood who he went to jail with killed a few guards and tried to escape from prison. The reason he was robbing that bank was to fund a revolutionary and anarchist movement. The doods he was hanging with were known to target cops specifically for assassinations. This guy wasn't anything close to an angel, he was a wannabe terrorist who got caught before he could do anything, and he got caught again trying to set something up. I'm also glad that you're able to take the moral highground on your high horse; I'm honored to be able to talk to a person such as yourself, whose above crude and dark humor. Seriously, get over yourself dood. Don't ever try and tell me that you've never once laughed or even giggled at a dead baby joke or a holocaust joke.

I'd consider the president joking about bombing a country to be different to a taxi driver joking about it, etc.
