id Software Lays Off Staff, Doom 4 Development Unaffected (with a twist!)

Bethesda, the parent company of id Software, has said that the development process for the upcoming Doom 4 was not affected and that the restructuring process was not in any way linked to the sales performance of RAGE, the post apocalyptic shooter that the company created and launched during October.
Pete Hines, who is the vice president of marketing and public relations at Bethesda, has stated, “As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go.”
Bethesda added, “id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go.”
It seems that despite the lay-offs id Software is continuing to look for talented developers who can help the team create the best game possible in the future.
RAGE has been the first original intellectual property for id Software in quite some time and represented the debut of a new graphics engine.
The pre-launch hype for the game meant that the bar had been set very high and the real life product failed to meet all expectations.
RAGE was praised for the shooter mechanics that in introduces and for the intelligence of the enemies but the graphics failed to impress everyone and the story was rather limited in scope and delivery.
id Software is now working on Doom 4, which was first announced in 2008, and the company has confirmed that the game will use the home consoles as the main development platform, relegating the PC to a secondary role.
honestly D3 was kinda cool, but I didn't like it too much.
Hopefully it has some Doom1/2 style gameplay. if it's just cheap ass horror, no damn way will I pay for it.
Rage was console-centric too
Either that or they did a VERY shitty job on the main platform anyway
What the hell? Didn't they say that focusing on consoles was a mistake?

It was just a shitty game.

I bet it wasn't id's decision...

Can't say I'm surprised, I lost hope in id when only one patch was released for RAGE.
God dammit id, why?
Well just look at what happened with Rage. I think just about everyone involved there dropped the ball, so it makes sense that they would now choose to just stick with the console gaming peasants and make a quick buck from the casual crowd.
Us PC users are too demanding and bitchy. I mean, we're only demanding quality games and bitching when they fail to deliver, but that's just too much for modern developers to accept given how easy it is to churn out constant shit for console users and make easy dollars there.
It's all about the money.
i think if we all sent emails to carmack (with that special code that you use if you really want him to read it, forgot what it was) telling him to back his shit up then he might see the true light
I thought rage was Ok, disappointing there wasn't any extra content released.
Why do you guys even care? It's obvious that id is having financial problems if they're laying off a lot of their employees. Focusing mainly on console platforms, a larger market than computer platforms, will certainly help them get out of whatever rut they're in.
I hope they don't sell out and make it a generic cover based shooter.
I hope they don't sell out and make it a generic cover based shooter.
If it does then I have lost all hope for humanity.

Even if it's (in your opinion) best for id, it still alienates PC gamers because we will be an afterthought.
Thats why "we" care.

You're worried about a multi-million dollar company selling out? Really?
id Software is now working on Doom 4, which was first announced in 2008, and the company has confirmed that the game will use the home consoles as the main development platform, relegating the PC to a secondary role.
Didn't Carmack say that this was a mistake for RAGE, and PC should be the main focus from now on?
Why does everyone bitch about RAGE, i thought it was a reasonable game, not wonderful but still worth the money

"Hardcore gamers" want everything go to their way because they have insanely high expectations.
"Hardcore gamers" want everything go to their way because they have insanely high expectations.
Because the 'texture streaming' technology it touted didn't work, ending in muddy textures and shitty models on even the highest-end PCs?
The gameplay was good, however, the UI was terrible and the art style contradicted itself constantly
Why do you guys even care? It's obvious that id is having financial problems if they're laying off a lot of their employees. Focusing mainly on console platforms, a larger market than computer platforms, will certainly help them get out of whatever rut they're in.
Yeah, they gotta focus on a 'wider' audience.
Imagine it.
Your decision, lol.
Because the 'texture streaming' technology it touted didn't work, ending in muddy textures and shitty models on even the highest-end PCs?
Again, "hardcore gamers" want everything go to their way because they have insanely high expectations.
Again, "hardcore gamers" want everything go to their way because they have insanely high expectations.
Apparently expecting a modicum of quality means we want everything to go our way. Go ahead id, turn Doom 4 into another visually bland, gameplay-challenged FPS game that brings nothing to the table.
I think I played RAGE for three or four hours before bringing it back.
Damnit, id. DAMNIT. I really want Doom 4 to be mind-blowingly awesome.
I bet it wasn't id's decision...
I _Really_ want to believe that.
I want to believe Carmack discussed that with the Bethesda board of directors and they told him to "fuck off, console gaming goes first". :/
God dammit id, why?
Because like it or not, consoles generate more revenue.
Again, "hardcore gamers" want everything go to their way because they have insanely high expectations.
Uh, the high-res textures were in the damned game files, the system they used and touted as the best thing ever did not work, at all.
How the hell is that high standards to expect something to WORK if it's been so hyped?
Because like it or not, consoles generate more revenue.
At the cost of their values
they practically defined modern PC gaming, and now they're leaving PC for consoles
Well R.I.P Id. You were a great pioneer in graphics technology back in the day. Too bad now you'll be held back by consoles.
they practically defined modern PC gaming, and now they're leaving PC for consoles
If consoles were a more viable option at the time of their inception, they would have "defined" modern console gaming.
Who gives a fuck? Video games are video games.
Even if it's (in your opinion) best for id, it still alienates PC gamers because we will be an afterthought.

yeah man fuck ID software
how fucking dare they have financial issues!!!
seriously did you like, ignore everything that was just said? If you 'cared' for ID you'd know they they might not have any choice but to do it. Money is tight these days. You can't just work harder with a smaller market and possibly lose too much to even function anymore all the time, sometimes you have to think differently.
