My first attempt at any action effects, I'd appreciate opinions and pointers from people. Don't be afraid to tell me if it blows. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3cNr_1oczs
Needs more camera shaking, gunfire is really powerful.
Needs more camera shaking, gunfire is really powerful.
It's supposed to give it an intense look. Alot of professional movie makers use it too.
Still wearing girl pants, eh?
Also, it would have been better if you made it look like the gun had any sort of recoil.
it seems like the blood "floats" way to easily.. I've never seen someone get shot before but the blood seems to squirt and float way too much.
still looks awesome though
Your firing too long for such a short sound loop, the sound itself really doesn't sound like anything more powerful that someone blowing a raspberry, and the camera doesn't need to be shaking so much.

Thanks. Know of any sound effect packs? I don't care if I have to pay for them
I love it when I get some honest constructive criticism on my shit so here are my thoughts.
I liked the dirt hits but you should leave some physical aspects such as a few bullet holes left on the ground. I wasn't a big fan of the color grading and that is just my opinion, everyone has their own style. I also dislike camera shakes, sure some people say it makes the atmosphere or film in general more intense and realistic but I think for a great action scene to work the viewer needs to have a clear view of what's going on but if you still insist on the camera shake I recommend actually getting somebody to jolt the camera on cue rather than just use the wiggler tool in AAE (of course they are suitable when the ground would actually shake such as a huge explosion but again, used in great moderation). The blood hits needed to be quicker as you have already heard.
Finally, I think you should look into creating your own foley and visual effects library, I know some people don't have the time/effort to do it but It's worth it in my opinion just because mostly everyman and his dog uses the video co-pilot effects library which I'm getting pretty sick of people looping the same music and using the same effects, it's begun to trigger an alarm in my head as soon as I see it that tells me "amatuer" (but video co-pilot does have some amazing tutorials don't get me wrong, people just need to make more original content imho) and also that means you will own the content 100% in that aspect.
Remember, those are just my thoughts you can do whatever. Just have fun.

I may have gone a bit over board on the feedback there but I just kept typing and didn't stop. Again good work though man.

also, lose the pants.
I love how you fall and put your gun down gently. :v:

Thanks alot man. I actually appreciate this alot. And it's cool to have people give me feedback without deliberately insulting me (like most people do on FP). As for creating my own stuff, I really don't have the time and means to do that right now. Hopefully I will eventually though. I'll drop the camera shaking, or make it less severe next time. The color correction, I was just playing with some different stuff. I wanted to find one that gave it a dark, post apocalyptic type look, because I'm planning to make a short film in that setting over spring break. Thanks again for the feedback
BUT, if one more person comments on my pants..I mean seriously, I wear skinny jeans, alot of guys do nowadays, it's just my style.
I think the gun needs more recoil and a new sound (if you want it to sound powerful, cause that one sounds puny).
I don't know if SuckerPunch said that, I'm too lazy to read.
Also, change pants <troll face>
Nice shoes. You a ballet dancer?
It's a good start I suppose but you need to make the muzzle flashes cast some light.

Just follow that.
The smoke puffs on the ground are also way to small and thin. There is also no impact spot for where the bullets hit the ground. You can just motion track some standard bullet holes onto the ground.
Get a gun that shoots blanks.
In short, effects need to be bigger. Far bigger. Specifically the splashes of dirt.
You'll also notice that once you resize them to be properly large they'll appear to animate at the right speed.

They're called Toms. They are for a cause. You buy a pair, they give a pair to a child in need, who doesn't have shoes. So no, I'm not a ballet dancer. And it's funny, I don't think I asked people to give feedback on what they think about my style and clothes..

It's funny because the shoes are shit and a kid who really needs shoes will wear them out within a month. I have a pair, they just died. Never again.
Also, way too much camera shaking. It was less so the amount of camera shaking that I disliked, but more the way that it appeared. usually camera shaking also includes some blurring. In this case it looked too smooth and..weird.
This video demonstrates why special effects suck.

Alright. Lets drop the subject of my shoes, because it's really irrelevant an has absolutely nothing to do with the video. Yeah, that's been covered. The shaking was a bad idea.
If I were you I'd try to add some tiny story and context to even your tests, when the focus is on the effects in their entirety they'll never look as good as if you have a few things (story, action, movement, characters) quickly drawn up alongside to help distract. I can't tell you how many times I've seen an amazing visual effect, only to back and realize it's a little less awesome upon closer inspection. Tests always look corny because everyone is focusing on nothing but the effects (and apparently your shoes)
So yes, at least add some scenery or something to make it more interesting (backyards just scream amateur) if you want to get more serious with the "tests", but at the very least get a better camera angle (it's uncomfortably low), maybe a different gun prop (looks a little toyish), and go from there.
Also, you could try to add more variance to the muzzle flares, not every flash has to be exactly the same shape, make some larger, smaller, different sizes, but just remember to keep everything in moderation.
Still, pretty good compared to most of the shit that kids make.

You dress like my sister, and all my sisters friends. It's hard to take someone and what they do seriously when they dress like a girl. It's like watching a debate between 2 presidential candidates when they have 2 dicks glued too their foreheads.
Buy new shoes.
Camera shaking is pretty pointless to be honest.
whats wrong with his pants?
I didn't know an MP5 had that much ammunition per magazine.
Less camera shaking, a gun is powerful, but the camera is way too shaky as it's been said before.
Also, if you want really nice looking blood, I believe you can build your own sort of "blood pack" or "splooge pack" using some homemade plastic explosives(really small of course) and a pack under your shirt. It'll look really nice if you do it right.
[editline]5th March 2011[/editline]
Also you might want to take a look into a CPR class so you know how a person bleeds when they are injured in certain spots. Although it's not really important since you can't see where he's been shot you seem to have arterial bleeding from his back..
Get a gun that shoots blanks.
Isn't that how one actor died a while ago? I remember a guy getting killed when getting hit with blank rounds at point blank range.
The problem with getting a gun that shoots blanks is you won't find a really nice replica for less then $400, I don't think he has that kind of budget.
You should shake a little bit. Guns have recoil you know. Lose the camerashaking a little bit. And try to find some better sounds for the weapon.
Also...buy new pants.
Did a little sound attempt for you, remember, shell casings eject from the weapon, so even the little sound detail thats there will add to your overall product.
