• Donald Trump blocks ExxonMobil from drilling for oil in Russia
Donald Trump’s administration has refused to allow US oil company ExxonMobil to drill for oil in Russia. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the government would not be allowing the oil giant to bypass sanctions on Russia that forbid US firms from working with their Russian counterparts. “The Treasury Department will not be issuing waivers to US companies, including Exxon, authorising drilling prohibited by current Russian sanctions,” Mr Mnuchin said in a statement, adding that he had consulted Mr Trump before making the decision
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-exxonmobil-oil-rosneft-russia-sanctions-waiver-steven-mnuchin-rex-tillerson-a7696841.html
That's... good, right? It'd be kinda fucky for us to be drilling there given recent events.
Do I fundamentally misunderstand the situation or is this a blow to Russia? If it is, how does this make any sense whatsoever?
Exxon must be missing Gen. Flynn right about now.
Not sure how I should feel about this. Being a facepuncher, I know I'm supposed to act like I hate trump, but I kinda get the feeling that he may have made the right choice here. I am glad that Trump hasn't been doing the best things for Russia since he has entered the White House.

The decision makes sense. There are ongoing sanctions against Russia and giving permission to ExxonMobil to bypass these sanctions would be a sign of favoritism.

Yeah this is the Trump admin extending Obama-era sanctions. It's good, but ironically one of the few good things Trump has done can be directly traced to his predecessor :v:
Do I fundamentally misunderstand the situation or is this a blow to Russia? If it is, how does this make any sense whatsoever?
It was a deal between Exxon, and the Russian state owned oil company, Rosneft. I believe Exxon drilled the actual wells, and Rosneft can't access the oil reservoirs in the arctic, which are worth billions upon billions, unless they can work with Exxon. So Russia for now just has to sit on billions of dollars they can't access.

What if exxonmobile made the application so that trump could deny it. That way, Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson's government becomes stronger, and can later make bigger changes that benefit Exxonmobil. With everything that has happened recently.. It doesn't really feel that far fetched.

I'd wager that XOM decided they would try and ram this through again banking on Tillerson's influence and Trump's perceived friendliness to Russia and support of oil expansion...but it just didn't work out. Perhaps this is all Mnuchin's doing, and he runs some ulterior agenda without much input from the President himself?

Folks, be sure to look at his post history.
