Google Buzz among projects to shut down in 'fall sweep'

• Google has announced that Google Buzz, Code Search, and several other projects will be shut down in the coming months.
• The Google Labs website will also close its doors today, as was previously announced.
• The process of evaluating and redesigning all Google projects was initiated by Larry Page when he became CEO of the company in April.
We aspire to build great products that really change people’s lives, products they use two or three times a day. To succeed you need real focus and thought—thought about what you work on and, just as important, what you don’t work on. It’s why we recently decided to shut down some products, and turn others into features of existing products.
Here’s the latest update on what’s happening:
• Code Search, which was designed to help people search for open source code all over the web, will be shut down along with the Code Search API on January 15, 2012.
• In a few weeks we’ll shut down Google Buzz and the Buzz API, and focus instead on Google+. While people obviously won't be able to create new posts after that, they will be able to view their existing content on their Google Profile, and download it using Google Takeout.
• Jaiku, a product we acquired in 2007 that let users send updates to friends, will shut down on January 15, 2012. We’ll be working to enable users to export their data from Jaiku.
• Several years ago, we gave people the ability to interact socially on iGoogle. With our new focus on Google+, we will remove iGoogle's social features on January 15, 2012. iGoogle itself, and non-social iGoogle applications, will stay as they are.
• The University Research Program for Google Search, which provides API access to our search results for a small number of approved academic researchers, will close on January 15, 2012.
In addition, later today the Google Labs site will shut down, and as previously announced, Boutiques.com and the former Like.com websites will be replaced by Google Product Search.
Changing the world takes focus on the future, and honesty about the past. We learned a lot from products like Buzz, and are putting that learning to work every day in our vision for products like Google+. Our users expect great things from us; today’s announcements let us focus even more on giving them something truly awesome.
I never even really knew what Buzz was and it's a shame that Labs is getting shut down.
How can I explore new features!?
Starts to cry:/
Darn. I've been using buzz for a year now and I like it far better than G+. I can understand why they want to get rid of it though. I just don't understand the point of removing the labs.
My buzz tab is still in Google+ at least
What does Google expect of Google+? It's not getting any more popular, and it's traffic went down 1269% this month.
I really disagree with Code search shutting down, it really helped me in certain cases when trying to find example code. Does anyone know a code search replacement?

Are they shutting down Google Code or just a code search engine?
:damn:
To be fair, it's only because it went up super high since it was released to the public and had that giant arrow pointing to it on the Google homepage.

Just the code search engine. Trust me, if GCode went down there'd be tremendous outcry

Oh, good. I can't imagine losing all those SVNs

that's such an inaccurate number
1) nobody but google has access to that kind of data
2) that decrease is being measured from the day the site went public beta, so obviously there's going to be a fucking decrease from the day it went public.

I prefer thinking he's using hyperbole instead of naming a dumb number
except that's a number that's been used in the news
except it's for traffic gains wtf are you doing baconator
Why are they shutting down Google Labs?
Why are they shutting down Google Labs?

While we’ve learned a huge amount by launching very early prototypes in Labs, we believe that greater focus is crucial if we’re to make the most of the extraordinary opportunities ahead.
In many cases, this will mean ending Labs experiments—in others we’ll incorporate Labs products and technologies into different product areas.
I think it's because they would come up with a new idea, shove it on Labs and never put it to good use
But things like gmail labs will remain I presume?
But things like gmail labs will remain I presume?

Update 3:36pm: To clarify: we don't have any plans to change in-product experimentation channels like Gmail Labs or Maps Labs. We'll continue to experiment with new features in each of our products.
Should just shut down G+ as well. I don't even know why they bothered competing with Facebook
Should just shut down G+ as well. I don't even know why they bothered competing with Facebook
The competition is good, notice how Facebook is actually attempting to add new features to compete with G+, so it's making Facebook better too
