I'M NOT HERE TO SAY "OMG WE SHOULD BE LIKE ATLAS SHRUGGED LOL DUMB REPUBLICANS", THIS IS A SERIOUS DISCUSSION So, i finished playing bioshock for the 3rd time today, and this time i actually paid attention to the dialogue. I was wondering, taking both location and government into account, what would be the biggest benefits of a real-life rapture city? I'm sure that major medical advances would be great, and the whole "nothing is morally questionable" thing would be perfect, but is there anything im not seeing here?
Is there any real benefits to having a city underwater?! Just look at the first scene of the game... shows parts of the city are very vulnerable to things from the surface
err i don't think you quite grasped the message that the city didn't work at all.
Lots of tourist

Wouldn't really be possible to have its own self sufficient food supply so it's not a very good idea. Little off topic, I've never finished Bioshock. Game got too dull as I got near the end.
Practically nothing, other than proving that we can make such a city. If you hadn't noticed, Rapture is a shit hole thanks to the 'Nothing is morally questionable' way of thinking. Think about it, would you want druggies fucking everywhere? Especially ones that have super powers?
Not much.
I think wearing cool diving suits everywhere would be fun.
the greatest natural barrier/defense EVER?
Which would be brought to its knees by a single torpedo?
the greatest natural barrier/defense EVER?
Take a look at my post again? Oh yea, and if you saw the G.I. Joe movie, that didn't work out well too
An earthquake would suck.
It would not work, the pressure of the water would break the glass thus flooding the city, then the city would be money lost.

All people would have to do is drop weights and we're fucked.
Which would be brought to its knees by a single torpedo?
bulkheads and do you think the pressure might destroy it? serious question, what would pressure do to a torpedo?
It'd be underwater. Shit would be so cash.
Rapture doesn't have to be underwater, it just has to be isolated and full of geniuses and elites.
Unless if they're able to export undersea animals as food, nothing.
Wouldn't really be possible to have its own self sufficient food supply so it's not a very good idea.
Uuuhhhhh. Fish?
You wouldn't have to run pipes very far for giant desalination machines?
the view
The only thing I could ever see structurally being underwater would be a prison or some place for scientists to experiment
the greatest natural barrier/defense EVER?
"hey guys i got this great idea for defending us from them commies" "oh yeah? let's hear it" "we build a city under water" "wouldn't that make us easy to be cornered" "n-well..." "and where exactly would we go in event of a bombing?" "well you c-i don't really know, i hadn't thought about that." "it's god damn genius, man! i've got the president on speed dial i'll call him now!"
Surviving the eventual nuclear winter/zombie invasion/whatever causes the end of the (surface) world.
Well, for one thing, the pain from the city compressing because of water pressure would last only a moment. The sharks would be cool too
the greatest natural barrier/defense EVER?
That the city has to OVERCOME to be down there.

"it's god damn genius, man! i've got the president on speed dial i'll call him now!"
well, imagine the pressure, if you ever saw sphere, they did a depressurizing process which took a couple hours. in that time, you can destroy any stationary object you want
Rapture could have been inside a mountain, would've been less cool however.
Plasmids of course.
