Didn't hear about this? it's because Sky News / other UK news sources don't want to interrupt the elections, even now it's still focusing on Donald Trump. This happened nearly 10 hours ago.

Every time I switch on the news it's constant, uninterrupted, 'news' about the US election
That's fucking awful.
I'd say this is more important to a lot of Brits than an election on the other side of the ocean.
I don't know if I'm shocked that the election coverage isn't being interrupted, theres been a huge buildup for a while and the whole world is paying attention, I can't imagine anything short of terrorism to shift the focus of the news for the time being. Something like this is tragic and worth caring about of course but do they usually interrupt these sorta traditional broadcasts, like would 'local' news like a train crash be worth interrupting something like the Olympics?
Horrible that this happened though, at least a lot of them survived but it's a shame that lives were lost and so many were injured
It was scrolling on a bar underneath the BBC coverage at least.
Jesus, that's just horrible. I hope that the families will be able to find peace.

I remember when the trams first arrived in Croydon, they were one of the safest modes of transport. Not to mention step-free access prevented old biddies or buggies from getting trapped in between the tram and platform.
For the past two years (or 80 weeks of my life) I've been using the tram day in, day out to go to work and I've never seen trams have an accident at that junction or elsewhere. On the odd occasion when I have been to New Addington the drivers have slowed the tram right down at that bend, so I can only assume he must have been speeding. It's a real shame it happened, unfortunately those early morning trams are packed as everyone from Addington commutes on it to go to East Croydon. Luckily I go the other way to Elmers End and the tram is pretty empty, 6-10 people at most.
Just an FYI at that bend, Addiscombe used to have an old train line which ran to Elmers End and eventually to London Bridge. When you come from new Addington you can feel the tram tilt slightly due to the earthworks, I guess it didn't help if he was speeding and the the angle of the tram as it turns into Sandilands.

The tram that derailed in Croydon killing seven people was travelling at three and a half times the speed limit, investigators have said.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said the tram, which was carrying about 60 people, was travelling at 43.5mph in a 12mph zone.
In its interim report, it said there was no evidence of any track defects, or obstructions on the track.
The investigation also found no malfunction of the braking system.
The tram derailed last Wednesday morning shortly after coming out of a tunnel with a 50mph speed limit.

Three and a half times the speed limit?
Duuuude, that driver is fucked.

speed is worse than alcohol
As horrible as this is, atleast it wasn't in the underground like the Moorgate incident.

You'd be surprised how often that happens
As long as you got people in charge of stuff, people will fuck up. I could easily imagine this guy having gotten no sleep and just trancing out at the wrong time. I mean yeah he's responsible but i can't imgagine this guy was at all well at the time
43.5mph in a 12mph zone is ridiculous though. When you're in a situation where people's wellbeing depends entirely on you, there isn't really an excuse for just zoning out.
tbh these should just be automated by now, doesnt seem too difficult to impliment and would 100% prevent issues like this. im pretty sure the dlr is automated or at least just has a driver that presses buttons to stop and go
Apologies as the sun is the source but videeo has popped up of a driver on the same line sleeping. http://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2216329/croydon-tram-crash-line-video-driver-sleeping-wheel/
