The Humane Society reunited a disabled military veteran with his dog Thursday. The owner said the pet was stolen a few days before.
Retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant Perry Hicks finally exhaled for the first time all week.
"I think we were both crying," Hicks laughed.
The staff of the Humane Society looked on as Hicks was hugged and kissed by his pug "Lucky". Perry said the dog was taken by someone right in front of his Berkeley home January 30, 2012. February 1st, Hicks got the call he needed from Berkeley police.
"All I understand from what Major Edison told me is that they picked him up off the street,' Hicks remembered. 'He was just wandering in the street and I guess Animal Control just happened to come by."
Officers showed Hicks a picture of the dog for a positive I.D.
"The easiest way to tell is that broken right front paw that stuck out," Hicks said. "In the picture you could see it."
Hicks added he is extremely grateful to the staff of the Humane Society who made sure he got Lucky back healthy and strong... very strong.
"He's the biggest coward you ever saw. But, he is strong as a horse,' the man laughed as his guardian, Toni Furlough tried to hold on to the dog`s leash.
Police would only tell Hicks that Lucky was found outside their jurisdiction. So, the man wanted to tell other dog owners how to keep their pets safely at home.
"There is a leash law in Berkeley, and I let him out without a leash," Hicks said. "So I would just say, remember the leash law."
sorry; misread
so animal control picked up a dog who was illegally roaming the streets, then returned it once the owner was identified? i wonder how many of us will still cry "KILL THE PEOPLE WHO STOLE THIS POOR DOG" with this new information
If that guy didn't feel any shame over stealing in the first place, I probably would've still been upset with them.
That story was so sad, I'm glad to have read a happy follow up.
So my post in the other thread was kinda right. And you guys rated me optimistic....
This is good news. I'm glad to see a happy ending!
I'm in tears. Someone hold me.
It was reported stolen, when it wasn't the case.
Title gave wrong impression.
Oh look, I was right :v:
Glad to hear they're reunited. Everyone needs someone else.

1. The article didn't say that the humane society took the dog, only that they returned it.
2. The dog was originally taken by people in a unmarked white van, on the guy's front lawn, and they didn't bother to stop even as the guy left his house and tried to flag them down.

Yes, thats how animal control works. I work animal control and people LOVE it when you call them and tell them you found their pet. Greatest feeling in the world.
Sad story with a happy ending, the world is a big big place :(

No, it was stolen. A few days ago a van randomly drove by his house and snatched the dog up.

It was stolen...

Not doubting the guy but are there any witnesses to this besides the man himself?
It was stolen...
Because a lot of people will immediately say that something was stolen when they actually just ended up losing it (either on accident or due to carelessness).
That's great news!
