PORT ORCHARD, Wash. — Horrific accusations of child abuse in Kitsap County, where police say twelve children, from infants to 13 years old, suffered beatings, starvings, and sexual assault at the hands of their father, Melford Warren.
Prosecutors say the two mothers, Amanjut Jaswal, 28, and Shannon Smith, 41, sat by and did nothing. The two moms were in court Friday, facing criminal mistreatment charges.
“These children were held against their will, denied nutrition, denied medical care, and physically and sexually abused,” said Scott Wilson, with the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office. “It’s one of the worst cases of abuse we’ve ever seen.”
It appears, between them, the two women had 12 children, and all fathered by Warren.
Detectives believe Warren kept the family in a house in a quiet Port Orchard neighborhood. According to court documents, he often denied the children food, and locked them up for days in the attic or a bathroom.
Police say Warren also beat the children with sticks or bats, and sexually abused and raped them, and the two mothers covered it all up.
Officers were initially tipped off to the case when a social worker at a Tacoma hospital noticed suspicious injuries on one of the infants.
“This is just bizarre and it’s not making sense,” said Monica Jaswal is the sister of Amanjut, who she describes as a a dedicated and loving mother. “I’ve known my sister all my life and none of this I can say about her.”
But prosecutors call her life with Smith and Warren as “cult-like,” and she described herself to police as a breeder for Melford Warren.
Crazy how this kind of stuff gets found out. It makes you wonder how many people are out there doing stuff like this and not getting caught
And why, exactly, are we charging these two women again? I highly highly doubt they wanted to be part of this, and as is so often the case when child abuse like this pops up, I'm fairly sure they played along out of a fear for their own lives. They need help, not incarceration, save that for the dickhead dad.

We don't know anything for sure, and the law doesn't act on doubt with a whole lot of things.

Sounds doubtful to me.

Sound brainwashed if you asked me. Don't really know where that's gonna get them, thouh.

In a better country they'd probably end up in a hospital for the criminally insane.

Many women have this 19th century mentality that they must stick with their man/husband, no matter how fucked up he is.
Seriously, there are lots of reports were the victim of a crystal clear case of domestic abuse retires the police report, even if psychiatric help is available at no additional cost.

I know enough to know that most of the time one party in the relationship plays along with abuse out of fear that they will be targeted if they try to stop it.

It's not that they're being arrested for abusing their children. They are being arrested because they didn't do anything to stop him. You mean to tell me that neither of them could have told the police when they went to a supermarket or whatever? They are his accomplices in crime.
