EU readies cash to help Ireland cut energy dependence on Brexit Britain
Two big Irish energy projects designed to reduce dependence on Britain are set to benefit from EU funding as the bloc steps up efforts to support the country with the most to lose when its bigger neighbor quits the European Union.
Brexit has cast doubt over the security of the gas Ireland imports from Britain, which supplies 60 percent of its needs. As an EU member, Ireland is not allowed to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement.
The Irish government has thrown its weight behind two new energy import projects: EirGrid and RTE's Ireland-France electricity link, and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal proposed by a private investment vehicle that took over the project from U.S. energy giant Hess.
This sounds like another hit to the UK. As small as it may be, they really could use the money Ireland pays them in exchange for energy.
Yes, this is exactly what we need - diversifying our energy sources and becoming less reliant on Britain can only be a good thing.
That EU funding sure seems useful huh 🤔

I'm not sure what you are refering to. Irish fans are not known to be violent at football matches?

Irish fans panel bash the cars they accidentally dent
I mean it's to be expected, the EU will try undermine the UK where it can now. We're competition.
notrly, we used to / currently receive EU funding for lots of things, everyone does, it's not a question of undermining.
All they've done is identified that Ireland would have had a dependence on a non-EU country in the near future and moved to curtail it because interestingly enough that is what the EU is about, supporting the countries within the Union with funding for projects like this.

I don't see how it's really undermining you, it's really helping us since things are gonna get weird with the UK no longer being in the EU.
We have in the past attempted to move away from relying on pipes in Britain anyway, so this is just a continuation of these efforts.

We wouldn't have motorways in this country without the EU.
That's not hyperbole; that's simple fact.
I'll gladly take every penny we get from the EU seeing as we paid an unfairly large share of the EU debt during the banking crisis.

They do owe us one, certainly. I hope the next government takes full advantage of it. Particularly if the rumours are true and Enda Kenny will be the next EU Council President. Because, although I don't think he's been particularly good, Kenny is popular abroad and considered a good negotiator.
It'll also give an excuse for the New York Times to correct their mistakes of the past.
