Evolution of PlayStation graphics: From PS1 to PS4

It's actually quite a good ad, gets me hype.

Was that music made for this video? It's super nice.
Is it bad that I can't really tell the difference between ps3 and ps4 graphics? The xbone is even worse. If you told me what they were showing was running on a 360 I wouldn't think twice.
that brief footage of Infamous: Second Son looked cool
Other than that, it's nice to see the evolution of graphics for the playstation brand, I cannot wait to get a PS4. and see what is in store for this next gen of games.

the thing is even though the new consoles will be able to handle much better graphics, all that we have right now is what we regard as "current-gen" graphics. It'll be a few years before developers really start to push the limits of what the PS4 and XBone can do and develop new game engines, so right now all the devs can really do is up the resolution and add some fancy shaders and lighting effects.
wha wha whats that game/world thing at the end? :o
i like how the old gen equivalent for bf4 graphics is modern warfare 2 on the video

It was obvious the second you saw it that things changed by a lot.

There are noticeable differences in the quality of textures and particle effects mostly (the Knack clip showed a ton of particles coming off smashed shit, detailed particles, something this gen can't handled well). But for a few years everything else is going to look pretty samey.

The graphics didn't change much between MW2 to MW3, though Black Ops 2 might have been a fairer choice as the style helped the graphics a ton.

Early PS2 games weren't great, they were showing off massively improved polygon amounts and stuff, but we didn't see the good lighting and such until later. We're reaching a point where the quality of meshes and lighting are so good already (or we've found ways to hide their flaws) that demonstrating improved meshes is hard. Diminishing returns.

Last generation started off pretty slow too. I remember playing Perfect Dark Zero on launch and I thought it looked amazing. Today, well...

I wonder what graphics will look like by the end of the PS4 era.

I believe that was the latest final fantasy.

assuming it lasts nearly a decade, we're SORTA BASICALLY there anyways as of now

Wasn't Oblivion a 360 launch title? It had pretty environments but... uh...

everyone had a horrible potato face

I was more concerned about what some of the characters were saying rather than the ugly graphics :v:

That's because upping the polygon count in 2000 or 2005 was much more noticeable than in 2013. I'm not saying that it's worthless to have more detailed models now, but it was way easier to notice back then.
MGS5 has the biggest change out of all of them imo. I mean from MGS1 to MGS3 was a massive change and then to 4 and now to 5.

Games will also become smoother for the new generation since framerate should be higher now

Look, problem is, we don't have computers yet able to run unbiased light simulations in real time, and we won't for the next 10 years. That much I'm willing to bet.
So yeah no games won't look like that on PC. And also that's a horribly oversaturated picture at the top.
oh shit son i loved Second Sight
Disruptor > Red Faction II > Resistance > Killzone is a bit of an odd train but okay.

I always love seeing MGS reppin' for Playstation.
I feel like i'd most want to play MGS5 on Playstation even if it were on PC.
The transition of 4:3 footage into 16:9 footage was really jarring.

To be honest, for the time even then it was kinda mediocre but it's an 'achievement' of the developers if I can call it that. Microsoft didn't even give them proper dev kits, so they had to work with brand new hardware from scratch and still got rushed for the system launch date.
I mean, it's bad, but it's not Sonic '06 bad at least.
man that mgs segment was sick as hell
also i dunno how people can't tell the difference between this and next generation, there's a very obvious quality difference

there is, but I can understand people saying that, since it's way less noticeable than the transition between PS1 to 2, or 2 to 3

Because you're comparing early PS1 to late PS2.
Near the end, I think there was a tiny bit of footage from Okami. Wasn't that a Wii-exclusive title?

Originally on the PS2, received a Wii port later.
That MGS bit was hype.

Okami was originally a ps2 exclusive and was ported years later.
