• (ASMR) - That tingly sensation from your head to your spine triggered by sound

Have you ever had a moment where you completely zone out to a sound, and have a rush of tingly euphoria that prominently radiates from the back of your head, and moves down your spine? This is something I've experienced since I was a young child. I remember listening to sounds like pages turning, people chewing gum, even the sound of soft spoken person in a microphone. There I would sit in my own little world, feeling an incredibly pleasurable sensation, hoping that the sound would never end. What would surprise me about this phenomenon is the fact that I didn't want to tell anyone about it. I felt like I was crazy or something, I mean, it is a weird occurrence. What's even more surprising is the fact that I have yet to hear a single other person talk about this phenomenon, until today. The thing about this event is that I never really seem to remember it happening, until it's actually happening. Soon after, I would just brush it off as one of those things. But earlier today, I had it happen to me while I was watching a video on YouTube. Out of curiosity, I Googled "rush of euphoria corresponding to sound". And what did I see? A simple blog entry describing this occurrence exactly how I would experience it, and it even corresponds to the same types of sounds. Further exploration yielded in an actual crappy looking site dedicated to the research and support of this phenomenon. www.asmr-research.org Here are some of the common external stimuli that trigger this event • Exposure to slow, accented, or unique speech patterns • Viewing educational or instructive videos or lectures • Experiencing a high empathetic or sympathetic reaction to an event • Enjoying a piece of art or music • Watching another person complete a task, often in a diligent, attentive manner - examples would be filling out a form, writing a check, going through a purse or bag, inspecting an item closely, etc. • Close, personal attention from another person • Haircuts, or other touch from another on head or back What perplexes me now is why this event is not explained? What could possibly cause this sensation? I usually hate it when people smack, it's actually one of those things that drives me batshit crazy. But why is there that one scenario where it's pleasurable to listen to? It baffles me. So I wonder, how common is this phenomenon? Do you experience it? What seems to really get you vibrating? Can you intensify the feeling in any way? What up? Some shit that kind of makes me tingle (Pretty sure this qualifies as the weird part of YouTube): lol Extra shit: "Official" website - www.asmr-research.org Blog I read - http://anti-valentine.hubpages.com/hub/ASMR Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/pages/ASMR-Research-Support/132726720084420
I only get this when I listen to music that is so impressive musically that it even makes me smile and almost cry when I listen to it.
I only get this when I listen to music that is so impressive musically that it even makes me smile and almost cry when I listen to it.
I would think that's more of an emotional response more than physical. I can sometimes feel a deeper conscious through music, but it's due to meaning, instrumentation, and introspection. ASMR is just some weird shit.

I have the opposite of this. Occasionally, these sounds are agonizingly painful, although they elicit no reaction 99% of the time.
I have the opposite of this. Occasionally, these sounds are agonizingly painful, although they elicit no reaction 99% of the time.
That's very interesting. As I said, no noise usually makes me cringe like the sound of chewing with one's mouth open. But the video above sets off that tingle, I'm not sure why.
I get it from really epic things. As in, the proper epic. The skyrim trailer, for example. And this: No idea why. I was shivering the first time I watched the skyrim trailer. I was overwhelmed, it was awesome. If anyone knows any trailers or clips that is really epic, please link.
I get it from barbershop sounds, like this one. Really sends shivers down my spine.
Specific scenes from disney movies will do this to me. No idea why
Can't say I've ever experienced this, is there a name for that weird thing where you involuntarily "jump" just out of nowhere? (not literally you just have to move your body)
It doesn't give me ASMR but this could be really useful for sleeping/studying
So what is the opinion you guys have of rubbing two pieces of styrofoam together?
that makes me want to shit my pants. I wanted to move this topic here too but then again I never found the time. ASMR is really amazing. Sometimes I just find myself hipnotized to certain things around me and get completely distracted. Not to be confused by other feelings that, even though they also "send shrivels down your spine", aren't really the same thing
I never knew that there was a name for this sensation until this thread. I wouldn't explain it as a tingling sensation in the back of the head, but that list and those videos are definitely what typically causes it for me.
This often happens in class when certain lecturers are talking. Sometimes older people, sometimes younger people, but always people with a warm, soft hiss in their voice and a generally soft tone. You may know that period after initial hungoverness when you don't feel sick but rather very tired and at peace - it feels like that. Makes it very hard to concentrate
I have type A and B ASMR, it's absolutely amazing. Some of you guys are getting confused with 'frisson' though, look that up on Google. It's not quite ASMR.
Chewing with the mouth open annoys me sometimes. Other times it's the most amazing sound in the world.
I get ASMR when someone pretends to draw something on my back with his/her fingers. Just an old childhood thing that still sends me tingling and/or asleep within minutes.

(not literally you just have to move your body)
when sleeping/almost asleep it's called a hypnic jerk; I'm not sure if there's a defined term for it when you're awake Myoclonus (involuntary muscle twitch) is probably the 'diagnosis'
I always get this when I'm getting my haircut. It feels so fucking good when they wash your hair and just start like caressing your scalp and oh my god its so awesome fuck im like "dont stop please keep washing my scalp forever" I can trigger a minor instance of it by slowly brushing my fingers off of my forehead too. This doesn't go down my back as much but it still feels fucking amazing, god damn I don't really understand how people get this triggered from auditory inputs and stuff though. I only really get it from my sense of touch, and rarely with anything else. An interesting co-relation is that I have really highly tuned sense of touch (this is actually quite shitty to live with believe it or not), so much so I'd consider it my strongest main sense. Maybe it has something to do with that?
as a kid when the barber would take the shaver around my neck it would tingle and feel good is this the type of thing we are talking about
Holy shit, it's caused by haircuts or touches on the back or the head? Well that explains what that feeling was. I don't believe I've ever gotten it from anything other than that, but it's a very nice sensation in my opinion. Also, it can lead to some hilarious situations sometimes. I remember I once wore a beanie on a cold day, and somehow it continually triggered this ASMR and I felt the entire day feeling like I was stoned.
If I think about it, I can elicit a response like this at whatever whenever without needing a stimuli. Although i've always been told I have a wierd level of control over some of my natural body reflexes and such...
It honestly feels exactly like rolling on MDMA. The rushes of euphoria that roll through the body like a tide.
We're on this subject and you just had to put Bob Ross there. Way to go on proving your point.
We're on this subject and you just had to put Bob Ross there. Way to go on proving your point.
-snip-, was being an asshole.
It triggers it for me, and I stated that it makes me tingle. I don't see how this contradicts my point. Pull the stick out of your ass, and stop with the negativity.
Wasn't trying to be negative about it. He's one of those voices that triggers that sensation, too. It's an interesting research.

All of my feels. Run your fingernail across the rigid edge of a jewel case.
It was this sort of thing that first got me into Zen Buddhism, meditation and searching for experiential discoveries beyond the scope of regular human existence. Basically I was on a train, contemplating life, reading Richard Dawkins when a line in the book hit me. It hit me like the force of 10,000 freight trains, and I was suddenly completely out-of-my-mind in a void of deep nothingness. Everything made sense. I was able to see, hear and feel everything around me in a profoundly new light and connect with people deeply unique way, and I was happy. Truly happy for the first time in my life because I actually understood what unconditional happiness and acceptance was. Since then my life has turned into a journey of exploring such things, because there simply is not a more beautiful, exciting nor meaningful existence than the one I had that day. Lots of people have many theories and that's where ASMR came from, someone's theory/ explaination for the deeply resonant emotional signature and you can believe it if you choose or opt for your own discovery/experience unfolding. I'm not a fan of putting scientific explanation or reasoning to this, simply on the premise that stepping out-of-my-mind for those precious hours was simply something that could never ever be explained as a solely scientific, physical or western-psychological basis. It is purely experiential. It makes no sense to anyone else in the same way that you might attempt to explain what you are seeing to a blind person who has never seen, or trying to explain a room to someone who has never been there themselves. No matter how much explaining you do, they will never know until they step inside. I stepped into meditation and it has become the single biggest life-changing thing I have ever embarked upon. Contemplating things has led me to more and more frequent bouts of 'enlightenment' or 'Jhāna' as they are technically referred to. I'm getting to the point where the amount of time I can spend in non-thought as I go through my day is longer than the time I spend wrapped up in unconscious thought. My feeling of emotions has become a great deal stronger and I can manifest with my mind/body alone pretty much anything I want to at will including great feelings of euphoria which is where it all started and my awareness of everything has increased what feels like a million times. I seriously urge everyone to contemplate stuff and try to bring about an insight of some kind. Once you have experienced something like this, everything will be come clear. You will drop all doubts about such unbelievable or unscientific not being important immediately when you get your first glimpse of the present moment.
