Jobless and undergoing chemotherapy, a Colorado leukemia patient learned that she no longer had health insurance because she underpaid the premium by a penny.
The story of La Rosa Carrington, 52, wasrelayed by the Colorado Springs Gazette. What's even more remarkable is, this isn't the first time an insurance company or benefits administrator has dropped coverage over a lousy cent.
"We’ve seen it before," June Harryman, a supervisory benefits adviser for the federal Employee Benefits Security Administration, told the Gazette. "It's not the first, and it won’t be the last."
Here's how this came about: Carrington lost her college admissions job in May and was eligible for COBRA, which entitled her to continue her health insurance if she picked up the premium. However, the federal government, as part of economic stimulus, is paying 65% of the COBRA premiums for some laid-off workers. Carrington hadn't yet received a bill, so she calculated that she'd owe $165.15 and sent it in.
The benefits administrator for her former employer figured she actually owed $165.16 and sent her a letter telling her she would not be insured because she underpaid. A company representative told her on the phone that she needed to send a 1-cent check or money order if she wanted to be covered.

The things some people do

The one reason I would not want to live in America is because of the health care system, it is not engineered to treat people, its engineered to take as much money from them as is possible.
Welcome to a deregulated "free market." Enjoy your stay (it won't be long).
Well, she better penny up the cash
this is just terrible
There should be a law against terminating insurance like that.
Perhaps if a person has been diagnosed with an ailment that is considered life threatening, they can't have their insurance taken away like that for as long as they have that ailment.
I love the free world. :fsmug:
That will teach the bitch to underpay any time in the near future. (Sounds like that's all she's got left anyways):colbert:

Our Healthcare system is a joke.
That's so fucking stupid.
We don't have to pay Firefighters or Policemen to protect us, that's covered by the government. Why is Healthcare so different?
Our Healthcare system is a joke.
Shut up commie.
On the bright side, they said she could just send a 1 cent check to continue her insurance.
We don't have to pay Firefighters or Policemen to protect us, that's covered by the government. Why is Healthcare so different?
Firefighters and Policemen provide a service, not give it away for free.
Also, who the fuck do you gives the government the money to pay Firefighters and Policemen? That's right! The tax payers. :patriot:
Fuck I hate my state
If you haven't got heath insurance in America and say you get cancer, is there nothing at all you can do? like is there any cancer charities who will cover the costs?
What a wonderful system
That's very fucking depressing.

With all the millions of people with cancer, ha dont even joke about that nonsense.
Get sick in the States without an insurance and you're fucked.
Greed at it's finest.
It's the same bullshit every U.S. citizen, middle class and below, faces on a daily basis.
My father, a mechanic, lives in fear every day of being hurt on the job. Not because of the pain, but because he's self-employed and can't afford to cover himself or any of us on health insurance.
It's pretty absurd that a hard-working person has to live under the looming shadow of injuries that WILL happen and the insane cost that follows.

No. In America, you'd have two options:
1 - Die
2 - Get treated, but have all of your stuff repossessed and live a long cancer-free life as a homeless person
Ok well she can still send in the 1 penny and get covered, so what's the big deal?
I don't see why you guys are so mad about this.
Yeah it sucks but she underpaid, and underpaying is underpaying. The company is a business, not a charity. They could get in huge trouble if it was on the record that they foot the bill for people. Yeah it's a penny and it's hardly anything, but you can thank sue happy dickheads for this, not the company. If it got out that this company was footing the bill AT ALL, people who were declined coverage because they underpaid could use it against the company in court. It doesn't matter the amount, they could still be fucked over in court just by the very act.
Take a look at the big picture guys, christ.
The even sadder part is many people wish the system to stay like that.
Disgusting.
Thats because the system works.

They could just classify it as non life threatening. They do it all the time right now.
You guys make such a huge deal out of nothing and it's so stupid.
The real point about this is:
"Woman underpaid her healthcare premium, but she can still pay the rest and still be covered"
But you idiots (including the source) make it out like this:
"Woman underpaid BY ONLY 1 PENNY and the EVIL company wants her to DIE and the American healthcare system SUUUUCCCCKKKSSSSS"

Its pretty funny because if you think about it, its the same thing in a country with "free" healthcare. If people didnt pay their taxes there wouldnt be healthcare and in the long run its really no different from the USA system which is business run.
Fuck the government taking money out of my paycheck for healthcare, I get health insurance through work.
so they would really take away a woman's chance of recovering from cancer over 1 cent?
who gives a fuck about 1 cent?
