I always wondered if among Facepunch are some dedicated listeners of Drone. Furthermore this genre and especially this band is pretty unknown among people. So I thought I could share some information about this band. Well these two are the only members.
Sunn O))) (pronounced sun) is an American experimental band known for its synthesis of diverse genres including drone, ambient, noise, doom metal and black metal. Supported by a varying cast of collaborators, the band has two core members: Stephen O'Malley (also of Khanate and Burning Witch) and Greg Anderson (of Goatsnake). Sunn O))) is named after the Sunn amplifier brand, whose logo includes a circle next to the "SUNN" banner with waves heading off to the right (the band uses this logo in the cover art of many releases); In interviews, Stephen O'Malley stated that the name was also chosen as a play on the name of the band Earth, pioneers of drone music throughout the 1990s, reasoning that Sunn O))) revolved around Earth. Before the band members moved to Los Angeles, the duo briefly used the moniker Mars. The band's sound image is extremely slow and heavy, using electric guitars, in low tunings such as drop A, enriched by resonant feedback creating its soundscapes. There is very little drumming and a lack of any discernible beat. When performing live the band wears Grimm Robes, fills the air with fog, and plays at an extremely high volume.
Here is the logo mentioned in the article. This song is quite strange and offers a unique atmoshpere Some actual live footage, but you have to be there to experience this band to the fullest. Personally I dig this genre, calling it music is certainly strange and most of the people will not agree with me. Perhaps it is not music that you will listen to when you are driving in your car or on a party but it offers a truly unique style and atmosphere that you have never experienced before. The dark heavyness is overwhelming and simply amazing, I cannot get enough from it. It is hard to get into it but once you like it, well you know. What do you guys think of this?
Not that big a fan of drone. The closest I'll come to drone is funeral doom, really. And as to them not being that "well known" I beg to differ; I see jokes involving Sunn O))) quite often, really. In fact, I've seen more jokes revolving around Sunn O))) (Orbital puns :v:) than most any other metal band out there. Whether or not that's a good thing, though, I can't really say. :v:
I like that one song that goes BWOOOOMMMMMM.
I've always loved the atmosphere they create.
It's nothing I'd listen to, but it certainly is interesting
Sometimes at night I lay myself down on the floor and turn the volume to maximum and enjoy the ambiance. I usually listen to it when I want to sleep, but that can turn out quite bad.

Usually it turns out well, but sometimes I get horrid nightmares from it. Which turn into songs......
Electric Wizard has also a special place in my heart. A friend of mine bought a Vinyl of them and we listened to it in my basement on maximum volume. Our ears were blasted away like our minds. Was something unique.
Very cool band. I don't really listen to much drone though.
A lot of people tend to just claim the band is shite and has no talent at all. They claim that every idiot could play such music. It takes a lot of skill to make such heavy deep soundwaves.
hey lets dress in black gowns and blare that shit you hear from cars at school BABOOOMBABOBOMBOM
Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley are gods.
There is a song of Sunn called My Wall in which Greg says: Play your Doom Axe Stephen O'Mallay* Sounds awesome.
F.W.T.B.T.," from Flight of the Behemoth, is a cover of Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" - The full title is "F.W.T.B.T. My Wall is cool. Atilla was great with them. Awesome band, they create such a great atmosphere with their music.

It's like listening to a broken fridge.
I love Sunn O))), it makes great background music. :v:
I think I fall into the 'not a fan, but it's pretty interesting' crowd. [editline]21st November 2010[/editline] I would definitely classify it as music though, OP, if experimental noise rock is considered music (which it is) then this can easily be.
Well I consider it as music.
It's like listening to a broken fridge.
Youtube comment.
I bought their newest album on vinyl. Everything about that record is fantastic.
I wanta Vinyl, although they're pretty rare.
While listening to them, I'm always waiting for that little break before the fast, awesome riff comes punching you in the face like a lawnmower of doom. THAT BREAK ISN'T COMING!!! :argh:
I had a listen to one of their songs and my brother poked his head round the door and said "Hey are your speakers broken?" :v:
The opening to the song 'Misfit love' by the queens of the stone age sort of reminds me of Sunn O))), but only the very beginning.
I think Sunn O))) are pretty good.
Monoliths and Dimensions was an incredible experience when I listened to it. I need to check out more of their stuff. Particularly the album with Boris

All their songs (10 or so minutes each) sound like the heavy and slow beginning to an amazing headbanging song. But that's it. Ten minutes of just the heavy and slow beginning.
Well I consider it as music. Youtube comment.
It's from a ''I am disapoint'' comic I found about Sunn actually.
