Washing machine severed Crewe boy's arm
A toddler had his arm ripped off by a washing machine in Cheshire.
It is thought three-year-old Lewis Wrench opened the front-loading machine during a cycle, and it kept running instead of automatically stopping.
Mother Rachel Wrench, 24, from Crewe, was in the living room when she heard screaming and found his left arm in the machine on 11 September.
Police investigated but have passed the matter to Trading Standards officers who are examining the rented machine.
It has been taken away for examination by local Trading Standards investigators.
Disneyland trip
The boy, who may have to undergo further surgery and will receive a prosthetic arm, was reportedly trying to help his mother by filling the machine with clothes.
Ms Wrench, a mother of four, found him covered in blood.
Lewis's arm was torn off just below the shoulder and he was taken to hospital, but doctors were unable to re-attach his limb.
Since the accident, which happened at about 11:30 BST, police, friends and family have raised money to treat Lewis to a trip to Disneyland.
A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: "Inquiries took place to determine the sequence of events which resulted in the child receiving the injuries.
"The investigation was then passed over to Trading Standards.
"Staff were so moved by the horrific incident they felt the need to raise money for the family.
"Different departments have donated prizes which will be raffled off at a later date."
A spokesman for Cheshire East Council said it was "very sorry to hear about this tragic incident".
The spokesman added: "It is something that we are aware of and we are currently carrying out investigations."

As terrible as this is, it is ironic how the child's surname is Wrench.
Ban washing machines.

No in all honesty I didn't even know that was possible.
Rated you Wrench, OP.

But that would be horrible to have your arm wrenched off. :c

Shit, that was unintentional :v:

They shouldn't. That rental company is so completely fucked!
Toddlers seem to find creative ways to get injured.
By accident.
woah
that's really, really horrible. I can't imagine the mother's reaction to that.
I thought having the door open cut power to the drive motor anyway???
I automatically imagined a toddler with arm ripped off.
It surprised me how unprepared I was for that imagination.

Yeah, and I even have personal experience in that.
Poor kid, imagine the pain he had to go through.
Shouldn't the washing machine have some sort of a safety mechanism?
Pretty awful anyways.

Our washing machine locks the door during operation.
Reminds me off the story I read today about a 3 year old buy who climbed in a dryer and died after his brother started it.
inb4 someone makes a Deus Ex reference
But this really is horrible.
Mine auto-stops when opened, pretty sure they all either auto-stop or lock themselves, something is obviously wrong with that machine, maybe some quick fix fucked up the safety measures.
Also funny how they're taking him to Disneyland, Disneyland has had a huge number of dismemberment accidents.

Yes, it should. Which is why I hope they sue the balls off of the company that made it. That's just irresponsible.
I mean, I'm all for parents being responsible for their children and the actions of their children, but there wasn't much she could do in this case. All it took was looking away one second, and then he's missing an arm. It's the company's fault for issuing a faulty machine. There is no justification for the machine not shutting off when opened. That's been a feature in every washing machine I've used, and for good reason.

I wonder where they'll take him if he loses an arm there?
I smell a faulty washing machine...

Exactly.
I really hope the company responsible gets in trouble for this. It's just horrible.
That's rather horrifying, especially losing a limb at such a young age.
Washing machines should perhaps be designed to be more safe, but the parents should have been more watchful too.
Who could rate this funny?
at least his arm was clean
They're supposed to be, all are supposed to either lock or shut down when opened.
I can't help but have Dwarf Fortress come to mind.
I feel terrible because of it.

I think loosing your arm when you're still young is much more bearable since you will never be used to having an arm and not miss it as much.
Fucking ow. On the plus side prosthetic technology has come really far and by the time he is 18 he will most likely be sporting a fully functional bionic arm, skin sense and everything.

I was just about to make a joke about that part in Human Revolution where Jensen sticks his arm in a kitchen appliance and has it ripped off. :(
So then this kid was giving his mom a hand with the laundry? No good deed goes unpunished as they say.
medical bills mustve cost an arm and a leg
