At least in my experience, he was a big youtuber years ago that sort of faded into irrelevance after his first movie came out. I forgot he existed until seeing this thread today.

Same here...talk about someone fading into obscurity. I always disliked his content, but he's pretty innocent when you compare him to some of the shit on YT at this point.
Despite Fred, I always at least had respect for Lucas. He was an independent youtuber who became very successful and seemed very interested in becoming an entertainer. When they showed his new youtube channel, all the respect went right down the drain.
To just go with the crowd and throw your own fucking work under the bus to join the bandwagon is seriously pathetic. This is a side of entertainers, mainly actors that I can't stand. Like Jared Leto after suicide squad, he plays "angel's advocate" just to save his own ass, when in reality he just ends up looking like a complete tool. The problem is you're kind of looking at from all the wrong perspectives. It isn't about artistic integrity or quality control - they're just looking to capitalize on his name via children who watched Fred on YouTube. In this instance, it's cynical, but for comparison I'm pretty sure there's a lot of people who watched Angry Video Game Nerd's movie simple based on its name alone. The reviews didn't matter - it was just impulse by people to watch their favorite person go from being so small on a silly little video website make it to the actual big screen.
I can tell you that I watched the Ashens movie simply based on his name and I thought it was alright. I didn't look for reviews or anything, nor did I think too hard about how a movie could be centered on a guy who reviews stuff on a sofa. The only difference between these is they were responsible for the quality of their own movies and it wasn't some crazy executive decision made to get them into theaters. There was some sort of integrity behind them despite resulting quality. I have a hunch that the Fred movies were never in any way about anything more than brand.
